I just put 36.05 gallons into what is advertised as 34 or 35 gallon tank on the long bed 2nd gen trucks.

Gauge has always been pretty reliable (knock on wood), trip computer was still showing around 60 miles to go and low fuel light wasn't on. I guess I must of been closer to out than I thought with 630 miles on the tank :) or that pump ripped me off!

17.5 MPG isn't too unreasonable. I have put 36.5 gallons in my 35 gallon tank. Needle was two widths below empty. But that was most likely on relatively flat terrain. Get into hill country and there won't be fuel under the basket long enough for it to flow into the basket; a needle under can end up in 'out-of-fuel'.

Put 8 oz. of Stanadyne performance and 8 oz. of 2-EthylHexyl-Nitrate in the tank and you might-could get 700 miles from a tank of fuel.

Yes, the 'low fuel' always lights at exactly ⅛ tank on the gauge. On *my* truck. But ⅛ tank is a lot more than 4 gal. On *my* truck. But as I said, 'hill' country can keep 5-8 gal. from being pulled into the basket. And the mfr has to consider this worst case scenario. So some people will certainly get more usable miles from a tank of fuel than others.

The excess comes from the air space at the top of the tank and the filler tube.

When I fill, the filler tube is full, still surprised showing about 60 miles to go and the needle at about 1/8th I was able to squeeze that much in, I really am suspect of the pump, because it seems like I should of flamed out!

I run an additive from Shaffer's, I have no proof it or any other additive works actually, but the marketing all sounds good :)
