The temps dropped this weekend, it is down in the thirties now in Northern Illinois. Both days on the first startup, I have huge clouds of what I am guessing is unburnt fuel (?) coming from the exhaust. It is almost as if the heater grid is not working, but if that was true, wouldn't the "wait to start" light stay on?
I did have the grid off when I rebuilt the vacuum pump and changed the radiator.
Or am I barking up the wrong component here?
Thanks... Gary

I can't say for sure you have a problem but I have a story that may ease your concern. When I was up in Vermont working at the Ben and Jerry's St. Albans plant I would go to the truck in the morning leaving work. I would cycle the grid heaters 2 -3 times then start. I would completely fog the entire parking lot with white smoke and up until I started exchanging the power steering fluid with Valvoline synthetic it would groan until I was almost home which was a seventeen mile trip. Moral of the story, I do not think smoke during a cold start is a problem just a natural occurrence.

Thanks for the reply David. This is a darker grey color smoke. I have always had a small amount on start up. Do not seem to be using any oil. I had a 2001 2wd before and it never smoked hot or cold.

Your diesel supplier is probably still selling the last of summer blend fuel. Winter blend fuel will definitely reduce smoke on cold morning starts. Winter blend provides less thermal energy, but it ignites at a lower temperature and burns with less smoke at first startup.

Huh.. good to know! And the smoke is a lighter almost white color. I was trying to solve some problems today and got a better look. Thanks to all, glad there is no need to be concerned.
