Dramatic loss of power going uphill

Found this in my transmission

I have an FSM but could not locate a part number. Is there an online source?

Driving from South Dakota to Idaho. Going from dry pavement to icy and snowy roads frequently. I would reach down and pull the lever into 4wd Hi as needed. Then on one pull, the lever is free. Figured a pin or something dropped/broke, and I was stuck in 4wd. Considering the circumstances, and that it was a Friday night, I decided to head home and deal with it in the driveway.

Sure enough, a little rubber grommet had worn, and out popped out the rod that shifts the transfer case. No harm, just hanging free. Everything else was in good shape. Dealer was open on Saturday, so dropped in explained the situation. He took a look at the grommet, disappeared into the back room and a few minutes later appeared with a new one.

Part # 68078974AA. He joked that they valued these parts dearly, as it cost $20 with tax. No problem, it saved me from a much bigger expense and took about 3 minutes to pop in. Over 200k on the original part.

While I found a very basic picture in the FSM, there was no part number associated. Is there somewhere online to find them? The other grommet is the same age and I'd rather replace it now than deal with it later. Thanks in advance.

Easier to just replace the complete lever, probbaly cheaper than the dealer wants for 1 grommet.
Yeah, the dealer cost isn't exactly charity. But the lever is perfect shape. Just the rubber grommet suffered from the weather and time. About a 2 minute preventive fix, but I still can't find the part number. ;-)

Take that part number (68078974AA) and stuff it into Google. From the results I saw jumping from there into Amazon that the grommet may be the same on both ends....give it a try and see what you think...

Found them at quadfour. But as mwilson said google. For OP it can be very important proactive move to take care of this.

One day when I was on a critical time schedule. Hooking up to my rv on a very steep hill, needed to work in four low and just as i reached for the lever it went completely limp. The link had fallen out because the rubber retains it. In 105 degree heat I figured out what the deal was and used some hose ends and zip ties and screw drives and finagled the the thing into 4x. All while the neighbors are standing around making ridiculous suggestions and telling me it was too dangerous on that 11% slope. A not so fun afternoon but all part of the romance

Geno's has the grommet for $6. Mopar parts is about $13. Amazon has the rod for $12. Grabbed a second one from the dealer so I can swap it out on my next oil change.
Stuff wears out. I'm at 205k and my front u joints are kaput. Have to take a look at everything when it's on the lift. Going to be an expensive month...

Figured it was something simple, but it always happens to me on a Friday after 5pm...

Made my own with a piece of rubber hose the correct size. Shift is much more positive now, no comparison to mush shift before. I will never go back to factory grommet.
