I stumbled onto this UP newsletter site where they’re quite far along on the restoration of the Big Boy 4-8-8-4 #4014 steam locomotive. In the tagline, it was mentioned that it may travel the transcontinental railroad for its 100 anniversary this May.
I’ve only seen one in person, and they are HUGE! I can’t imagine this thing at full speed.
Enjoy the article, and be sure to watch the video!

Not quite as big, but it was something to see as they moved this locomotive a couple of miles from Centennial Park in Nashville to a railroad yard to transport it to where they’ll restore it.

I’m guessing it’d weigh more than a D11, but I can’t see any cribbing or cross lashing at the end. I wonder if it slid around at all?

They are pretty dang neat. We brought an outfit in with one to haul the new cold box for our air seperation plant.

They made a serious miscalculation when they ordered the unit, it was too long to transport from the lake to the plant (180 ft) and too heavy to lift into place in the plant in one section (over 1,000,000 lbs). The only two cranes in N.A. that had the capability were booked three years out. Oops.

Here it is being offloaded - still in one piece - in the harbor (Lake Erie). Came all the way from Italy.

When they set the box on the ground the cables held tension for what seemed like minutes. The barge had to have come up out of the water 12" before the cables went slack. Truly impressive!

The Essex Steam Train has just restored and returned to service this past Dec Locomotive 97. They now have 3 operating Steam Locomotives. This past Christmas season they had all 3 out on the run. The upper pic shows Locomotives 40 and 3024 the day 3025 was rolled out for her brake in run after her restoration back in 2010 The lower pic was taken a few years ago before the restoration work began. 40 and 97 are both 1020's vintage Alco's. 3025 is a 1989 Taungshan Locomotive works Chinese locomotive

In the mid 70's, a restored locomotive, not near as large as this one, stopped in Florence for a day. Either they rebuilt a siding or made a new one because of the weight. I cannot imagine that there is a roadbed and parking sidings in good enough shape to safely let this thing make a run.

Where is this, E.D. ?
Oops thought I had typed the location. Those 3 operating Locomotives are at The Essex Steam Train, Essex Connecticut. Exit 69 off I95 then follow the signs. They offer train and river boat rides in the spring, summer and fall along the Connecticut River. In the early spring and late fall they also offer the "Your Hand on The Throttle" program. While not cheap for anyone that grew up playing with model trains and dreamed of running a live steam locomotive it's well worth it. After a training session you get to run the locomotive for an hour, supervised of course but it's all you. It's a blast. That's me in the pic running the loco a few years back.

They started offering the North pole express a few years back and it's taken off, those trains sell out every year. If you've got little people in your family and they have seen the Polar Express movie this train ride is a great family experience. I know I'm starting to sound like an advertisement for them. I use to volunteer there back in 1990-1995. They have come a long way since then. Retirement job there in my future? Who knows.
