I just found some NOS OEM CHRYSLER FUEL FILTER KIT 68083853AA on eBay! They are being sold by whiteracingllc for around $115 shipped. They had 4 kits I bought 2. I’m fairly certain that these are the original SDFK’s for our trucks?. Figured someone might be interested. These kits are impossible to find, they have been replaced by kit 68083853AB which has proprietary threads for a mopar filter which has been discontinued. The original kits had a 1-14 common thread size for common filters from many manufacturers. I plan to run mine as a pre-filter/ water separator using a Baldein BF1212. If someone else can confirm that this part number is in fact the original kit with the base for 1-14 thread filters I’d appreciate it... everything I’ve read looks like it is the right kit but I’m new to this diesel game so I’m sure one of you has many more hours researching this than I do! Thanks

No clue on your part question I have a 2nd Gen. But............was curious what you were talking about.

TDR77 member2member has the write up you need for details on this kit.

As always great write up.

Looks like it was $395 - $450 back in the day, I see some on Amazon for $92, some for $112, and that ebay score for $62ish...

Google that P/N and you will find it. If your not a full member, I highly recommend becoming one, for just 9.6 cents a day, $35 a year, can get some great access back issues to TDR40.

I’ve been looking into these for months now and was only able to find the newer of the 2 kits with (AB) at the end of the part number but had no luck trying to find the 1st kit that they produced... I’m 99% sure I have found the correct kit with the standardized threads, I was hoping to find out for sure on here so that I could be 100% sure and have a warm and fuzzy feeling about purchasing 2 of these kits. Either way I’ll post here when I have the kit and try a standard filter on the threads! Thanks for the response!

Well, no luck with the kit... The filter head has the mopar proprietary threads not 1-14 like I had thought? Oh well, I’ll be sending ‘em back. Guess I’ll have to do the fleetgaurd heated filterhead on one of these kits down the road if I can’t find one of the original severe duty fuel filter kits soon.

Don't understand...my fuel filter is a cartridge, not a 'spin on'.

WalterJ; The severe duty fuel filter kit is an add on filter for 3rd gen. It mounts under the the truck behind the transfer case on the drivers side frame rail. Pre-factory filter bowl. It has a heated base and additional water in fuel sensor. The problem is the original kit that mopar put out had the standard threads (1-14) so you could use filters from most manufacturers. In my case I want to use the Baldwin BF1212 and not use the additional WIF feature of the kit. The kits mopar superceded the origional kit with have a proprietary thread pattern which only their filter that has been discontinued uses. There are ways to modify the newer kits by outfitting them with a fleetgaurd heated base but it is more costly than getting the correct kit? Trouble is finding the origional kit! I will go the modified route soon if I cannot source the kit I need! I am also installing the GDP MK2+Big line kit post stock filter so at the end of the upgrade I will have a staged filtration system with 2 water seperators. 25mic+w/s (BF 1212) to stock fuel bowl 5mic+w/s (BF 7977) to final 2mic (Cat 1r 0750) on the GDP kit.

They make several different versions depending on your specific truck.
Already got the kit from GDP. Looking into getting the SDFK to run pre-stock filter bowl. Seems like I will have to modify a newer kit because I’ve had no luck in being able to source an origional kit with the 1-14 threads. I have been on the hunt for 3 months so I think they are impossible to come by this many years after they were produced. My ‘07 is basically new only having 48k mi on it!! I want to do my best to keep it that way! My Father gave me the truck after his plans of traveling the USA were changed by a broken hip and my Mother’s Alzheimer’s. He bought the truck in ‘08 and drove it very little. 6k of the miles were MA to CA in ‘08 and CA to MA in ‘18. So like I said pretty much a “New” truck!

Sounds like a nice truck. I guess I don't know what SDFK means?

Between the stock 7 micron and 2 micron GDP you should be good to go without anything else.

SDFK stands for Severe Duty Filter Kit.
It was an option that Dodge offered on their trucks after they realized that the stock 7mic filtration wasn't enough.

Right on. Why worry about it if you have the 2 micron GDP? Your good to go. The stock filter provides the water separation. Run some additive and call er good.

Some of us, myself included, are "filter geeks" and feel that due to the sensitivity of the HPCR system to contaminants, it actually works best to "cascade" fuel filters like they do in a marine environment. Cascading filters means running them in the order of micron size with largest first and finest last. It is the most efficient and effective way to run them as not only do they remove the most amount of contaminants per filter, but also allows for a longer and more efficient filter life as each is collecting what it is designed to do and passing the rest downstream to the next filter with a final 2 micc right before the CP3, rather then the 7 mic oem filter collecting everything that the tail throws at it. It ALSO has the effect of "polishing" the fuel as the excess fuel is returned to the tank by the HPCR and is then run through all the filters yet again and again etc.

Ya I hear you, I'm ICML certified so I've been through all the oil/filter/grease stuff many times.

But IMO it's overkill, but everyone sets up there truck differently and that's cool.

I’ve researched this topic extensively since shelling out $650 for one injector to be replaced. It wasn’t a fuel related failure it was an electrical failure fortunately. I say fortunately because if it had been fuel related all 6 would have possibly needed replacing! I realized from this experience that I don’t have 4K laying around to throw at new injectors if I get some “bad” fuel so I figure under 1k in additional filtration is cheap insurance to ensure I won’t have to deal with the down time along with the expense of repairs. I suppose I’d be considered a “filter geek” as well but at least I won’t be a broke “filter geek”! Well at least not because I chose to ignore Cummins reccomeded filtering for HPCR equipped trucks! I also know that the Baldwin BF 1212 is one of the best water seperators on the market so I think that alone coupled with the factory water seperation should protect these injectors that much more in the event of filling up with contaminated fuel.

No argument against better filtration from me. This truck I'm rebuilding now 4 out of 6 injectors tested poorly. The cause was contaminated fuel. The stock filter looked like hell. I since I just sprent 2400 for CP3 with bag of parts and 60 hp injectors from Industrial I decided to go with the GDP and Bigline kit as well. I'm hoping to be at 500hp with this build.

500 is where I hope to be someday... GDP + Bigline here too! I also got the additional big line to replace the line from the frame rail! I’ve been looking into lift pumps and have it narrowed down to the GDP fuel boss and the Fleece in tank dual pump. GDP is the front runner right now! I had origionaly planned on installing a FASS filter system but came to the conclusion that the staged filtering that I’m going with is better than the FASS considering that I’m not really convinced about their air seperation claims? I think it would have been a more viable option if I was in need of a lift pump but at this time I’m not and can address the lift pump at my leisure. If I was rich I’d do it all at once but for right now it’s one step at a time and hopefully it will be all done by the time I’m all done! But I’m sure by that time everything that I will have done will be outdated! Guess there’s always something to be ungraded?! Prices are rediculous for a built Allison and conversion kit! Built 48re isn’t much cheaper so I keep out of the throttle as much as one can! Believe it or not Smarty makes that hard to do!
