Greetings all,
Looking for some opinions and experiences with premature ball joint failures.

Vehicle background.

2011.5 2500HD 4x4 Crew
Total mileage 64540kms
This is not a hard driven vehicle. The odd tow/haul, mostly city, highway mileage.
Routine maintenance, including yearly wheel alignments.
No lift, or over-size tires/wheels.
Tire pressures checked religiously.
No added weight bumpers, campers etc.
The only suspension modifications Bilstein 5100 shocks & steering damper.
Vehicle has never experienced any abnormal tire wear.

Now the story.
A year ago I went to the dealer for routine service including a wheel alignment.
Mileage at the time 55568kms
I get a call from the service depart stating that they could not perform the alignment because the technician found excessive play in the lower and upper ball joints, and drag link inner and outer joints. (the vehicle exhibited no symptoms) Therefore replacement would be required, (thankfully I'd purchased an additional 5 years of warranty) which covered the almost $2k bill less $100 deductible. They did mange somehow manage to destroy one rotor and hub assembly during the R & R.
That said, work was completed, alignment then done, and I was finally on my way after 4 days in the shop.

Fast forward to today.
Mileage now at 64540kms.
I drop the vehicle off for it's routine service including wheel alignment...
And I get the phone call. Alignment can't be performed because the technician determined excessive play in the upper and lower ball joints and drag link inner outer joints. "WHAT!" I say. "I just had this same service performed 8972kms ago." Service writer didn't think to check past service records so he had an almost $2k estimate ready. Nor did he know that the vehicle still has 2 years of warranty left. I told him to check the records, which he did, noticing the recent work. He then stated the parts that were replaced a year ago were Mopar OEM, so therefore carried a 2 year replacement warranty.

So, of course they don't have the parts parts in stock, so I'm now re-booked for repair next Wednesday.

Of course this is the American Axle assembly, my 94 V-10 2500HD had the Dana 60, and when sold had 170000kms on the clock, on the the original ball joints (It passed safety with flying colours).

Just looking for some opinions/thought/experiences from those familiar with the 3rd and 4th the gen front ends.

Thanks in advance.

The factory Ball Joints do fail sooner than most but I think someone does not have a clue what they are looking at in that shop. I'd take your truck someplace else BEFORE ANY MORE WORK IS DONE!
Easier said than done. Small town, only one FCA dealer. I'd have to investigate private shops to see who does good work, and then they probably wouldn't homour the warranty.

Its these types of Dealerships/Shops that have made warranty repairs require Criminal Investigation...I hope the Dealer gets Audited and FCA Puts them in conditional warranty repairs. That means every Warranty repair they perform will have FCA oversight. It will require per-Approval for all warranty repairs and Ordered Parts.

Snoking Is correct..its Skunky stinky.

I think it's worth your time to take your truck to another town for evaluation. Unless your doing something really hard with the truck there is NO WAY you'd kill two sets of ball joints in that low a mileage. Take a long weekend with your special one and bring your truck to another shop.

Continuation of the saga,
So today I call up a good friend who is also an auto technician. Probably the best technician I know. He’s current and knows his stuff. He works in a private shop, and I was unaware that they had a spanking new alignment machine.
An added bonus is that they offer free courtesy estimates, and I could watch the inspection procedure.
So in the shop I go. 15 minutes later after inspection, there is a question mark over our heads as to whether the original work was even done. No evidence of R&R, and here goes...
The only ball joint with excessive play were the left upper and lower. Rights were tight as could be, and the drag link left and right joints were tight too.
This I can corroborate because I saw it with my own eyes.
Definitely something fishy here for sure. We were both wondering if they even performed the work the first time.
So I’ll discuss further with the dealer service manger next week.
I’ll let them replace all the parts they say needed under warranty, and make sure I see the old parts. I’ll ask for an alignment printout as well.
That said I’ve attached PDF copies of the original year and a bit apart work orders, and today’s brief report form the independent shop, in case anyone is interested.
Thanks for looking.

why would you even let them perform a alignment if its driving fine and tire wear is fine. makes no sense on your behalf. vehicles dont just mysteriously go out of alignment for no reason. if you are replacing ball joints i would use dynatrac or emf as theyre 50000000 times better than the factory units
