Last fall I needed a new turbo installed. I had an EGT probe installed as long as they were down there. Previously when towing I'd do the 5 minute shut down procedure never worrying about how high the temp got while towing. 'Cause I didn't know.
A couple of weeks ago we went from the U.P. to Holland for the Tulip Festival towing our 5r. We're happily cruising along at 67mph in 6th gear and in Tow/Haul.
Hitting one of the long hills in northern Michigan, I suddenly get an alarm, look at the gauge and the EGT is reading 1200+ degrees! About that time the transmission downshifts to 5th (because of the drop in speed) and the temp goes down and the alarm stops. Did some experimenting before hitting another hill by downshifting to 5th and the temp stayed well below 1200.
On the way home I did some more experimenting. This time on fairly level ground. Cruise set at 67. Here's a couple of pics. One in 6th and one in 5th. (Yes, I know at the time I had two Boost gauges showing. Not sure when I did that. One is now back to Turbo Speed.)
The difference in the engine RPMs was about 1550 in 6th and 2000 in 5th.
So after all this, I have 2 questions. Can I run all day in 5th while towing with the 68rfe? If so, will running 2000 RPM all day put undo stress on the engine?
