Here's one for you classic truck fans

Muscle Car Wars from when we were Teens

Test drove a new RAM today with 6.4L 8 speed trannie today. 2500 4 door short bed. That was a nice truck and it rode well.

Sweet. got a hook in the water fer a new truck. My wife's cousin has a 2018 Ram 2500 Laramie Crew Cab 4x4 with 6.4L and he loves it. Not sure what auto transmission he has though.

Good luck if fishing.

Cheers, Ron

That would have the 66RFE, like mine. The ZF in the '19 will make it lightyears better. The 66RFE has the same gearing as the 68RFE with the Cummins, and is frankly a very poor match for the 6.4 gasser. BTW, truck is for sale.

We bought the wife a new (2015) 2500 Big Horn crew cab. 2nd week of ownership we put a flatbed on it for horse trailer pulling and it serves our needs in fine fashion. Road mpg did drop from 15/18ish to 14/16ish with the flatbed and the associated aero change with the flatbed.

The 6.4 is very OK in Arkansas and the Ozark Mts. pulling a 10k horse trailer. It was adequate in the Rockies with 12k worth of trailer on Hwy 160, Wolf Creek Pass and from Pagosa Springs to Montrose thru Ouray Silverton. Over those passes we ran @5,000 rpm in 1st gear for miles. On both sides. But per Chrysler that’s what the 6.4 was designed to do.

66k miles with Penn Ultra 0-40 oil changes when the indicator says time (7k usually) one transmission fluid/filter change and all’s still good. The only time I miss the Cummins is in the Rockies. Also we do like the cheaper gasoline vs diesel. My math just doesn’t show a paybacks for us with diesel.

Good Luck

My neighbor bought a ‘19 2500 6.4. I drove it and it is a very nice truck. Truck rode smooth, shifted nicely and had decent power.

When I bought my 1st Cummins in 92 it was a no brainer. With every new truck since ( 02, 04, and 15) it’s become a little longer mileage wise to make break even. The only reason for a diesel is the 18K GN dump I haul 100 days a year. When I get out of the woods for good I’ll probably trade for a gasser.

Yep, my sentiments exactly JH. I do still have my '95, bought new. It does the heavy lifting of pulling the backhoe or loads of hay or the 12K hunting trailer from Arkansas to Montrose CO most every fall. But if I were only pulling a rv trailer or load of hay a couple times a year I couldn't (this is a painful admission) justify a new diesel today. But by the same token I sure can't imagine not having Old Faithful (image below), it's currently in the best condition it's seen in many years. Approaching a young 300,000 miles.

I said the same thing. I sold my 95 and bought a ‘17 6.4 2500. Really nice truck. But I ended up missing my Cummins. The 6.4 was a luxury vehicle masquerading as a truck while my 3500 is a truck masquerading as a luxury vehicle. There’s a huge difference between the two. I’m glad to have my Cummins again.
