Very sad news this afternoon. We lost an incredible mind to brain cancer.

Don't laugh, but I sort of appreciate the disco music now 40 years later. Musically, it really influenced many genres moving forward. Not saying that I actively listen to it, but I appreciate it for what it was.

That means we’re getting old
But really, I’ve always gravitated to the less popular trends, especially entertainment. Then again you might hear something and it’s like a dog whistle to you. Disco and pop music in general never did that for me.

Bee Gees did a lot of Disco in their later years for example. But, they also did some really good ballads. I especially appreciate real musicians playing real instruments like in this example. When I started playing bass in Jazz Bands in Jr. High and HS, these were the things we were playing. And no, I'm not old...LOL

I hear ya on the influence from the talented artists. But the in-your-face marketing and mass production of untalented, one-note monotonous beat wasn't music. I guess they said it was easy to dance to. Better than most of the so called one chord and crashing cymbals (is-that-really) music today though. Another pro is the girls dressed really, really pur-r-r-rdy.

You could pay me $1000 and I couldn't name you a modern artist or song they perform. My personal listening is really confined to '60's through '80 rock, classic country, bluegrass, and good Jazz. My personal favorites are Chicago, REO Speedwagon, Alabama, etc.

One modern group that I need to give a nod to are the "Piano Guys". We took the kids to see them in concert in Pittsburgh a couple years ago. Absolutely blew me away.

Most talented disco era artists for sure...
My philosophy: You can think about being old when you are 99. You can proudly wear the title when you turn 100. Other than that, it's just another day and number that follows you around. Just don't blink because age is like the Weeping Angels on Dr, Who.

I saw Rush in Mobile Alabama in 1980... one of the most awesome concerts I've ever seen. Opening band didn't make it so they played 3 hours without a break. Great Band, Great Percussionist!

I like all of the above, even a few Bee Gee's numbers. As I have aged I try to give some of the newer stuff a listen. Have even ventured into Steeldrivers territory lately...

But I had an employee that insisted I try a few songs by the Black Keys.....I gotta say they are pretty good....

Yeah, I saw it on the CBS Sunday Morning News. I was shocked, didn’t know he had cancer. We covered a few Rush tunes back in my Rock & Roll days.

Both you and my wife are far more adventurous than me when I comes to music. I’d be hard pressed to name 10% of the artists ( I use that term somewhat loosely ) from the 80s on up on the radio. That’s why I pay the tariff for XM.
