Unless you live 40 miles from the nearest one. But when traveling, for sure.

Walmarts are spaced along Americas roads closer than truck stops, which I avoid because of their pricing structure. Even when I towed the 16K fifth wheel, it only took one Peak BluDEF box added between NW Washington and the East Valley of Phoenix. With the 8K bumper pull it goes even farther.

Thanks for all the response. I understand about using fresh DEF but I use the truck for towing my 5th wheel. I tow maybe two months of the year then mostly use the truck as an everyday driver. When towing especially in hilly areas I use a good amount of DEF, but as an everyday driver not so much. I guess my question is what is the shelf life of DEF? If necessary do I drain it out and put in fresh? If so when?

• The best temperature for storing DEF is 77°F. Higher temperatures will not affect the quality of the DEF, but will impact its shelf life. The quality of DEF also is not affected if the fluid freezes. When stored under optimal conditions — between 12°F and 86°F — DEF has a shelf life of up to two years. If stored in warmer temperatures, shelf life decreases.

I leave my DEF on the lower 1/2 of a tank. When I am at 1/8 or I get the message I will add 2.5G. This is when I am daily driving. When towing I carry a 2.5 with but usually fill DEF at the pumps.

I am starting now keeping a record of every DER purchase and date code since I am getting into the mileage where people stare having issues.

My local service Tec told us to run the DEF tank low 1/8-1/4 before refilling with a 2.5 gal jug. Unless you are towing long distance. In that case fill her up before your trip. Says that this will keep the tank “fresh” and in cold weather it takes less energy to thaw out. It’s been working for me so far....

Thanks again for the information. My previous truck was a 05 Silverado with a Duramax . Didn't have all these headaches. I would have kept the truck except it was rusting to pieces.

It is not really a headache! I consider it a non issue. 4.5 years and 65K and always 2.5 box of Peak BluDEF when it get a little below 1/2 on the gauge. All purchased at Walmart except one at Love's in Wells, NV when truck threw a SCR code in the middle of BFE 15 miles South of Wells.

Had to learn how to tip the box up correctly, that is will the little black duckbill on the topside. So you start with the nozzle on the away side on the truck. Seems bit backwards, but no drips of DEF that way. SnoKing

Used the Super Tech for the second time pictured above. They did not have any Peak at WM that day. I kinda like that I can unscrew the cap in the store and see the seal intact!!! I also like that the date code is easily deciphered! I also like I have a jug to smash instead of a box and jug to get rid of!

I think I have convinced my self to use the Super Tech from now on along with the pumps when traveling!

In a pinch....I have used the Super Tech in my 2014 3500 when I ran low and was away from bulk DEF. Never had an issue with it.....and, unless the price has changed....$7.88/2.5 gal.

When I buy Peak BluDEF and WM, the box never leavings the parking lot with me! They are kind enough to recycle it for me. SnoKing
