If I were offered free oil changes I would say NO THANKS!!!

But who WILL thank you when you say “no thanks”?!

Its sad to think you might actually judge people based on their oil choices.

Don’t forget I run the same oil you do. I just don’t care if people run different oils, and I don’t put them down for it. They all meet Cummins spec, and all have their benefits and drawbacks. I like the boutique oils for my use, but that’s above and beyond Cummins spec and in all likelihood not necessarily, but I like them. I’ll state my reasons why if asked but I try not to push it. Honestly I talked about my Amsoil use a lot more in the past but your constant Amsoil push has made me rethink even mentioning it. It’s not because of Amsoil, but rather your abrasive pushing if it.

I have to ask, do you ever get tired of correcting people on their choices? It’s constant.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d rather enjoy a beer and a good burger with you but the way you come across in most threads is arrogant and annoying. I’m 110% certain that’s not your intent but perception is reality, and the perception is that if we do anything different than you we’re wrong.

I simply ask that you look at the way you post. As I stated, I don’t think you mean it in the manner you present it and I’d rather cherish the opportunity to have a few beers to discuss trucks, life, and women but that doesn't help the way you post. I won’t split a pitcher thou, as you don’t like IPA’s and I think Stella tastes like unrefined piss :p

So i see we are once again back who uses the wrong oil in there shiny new truck, I really don't care what you all put in your Cummins diesel engine! I use 10-30 Synesthetic oil that meets Ram / Cummins spec period. I am getting and my easy chair and popcorn siting down, ready for the WAR!

What brand of popcorn???

Post #21 should be printed out and be framed, strategically placed between one’s copy of The US Constitution, The Bill Of Rights, and The Ten Commandments. :D

In keeping this thread on topic......neither my 2013 3500, 2014 3500, nor my 2018 4500 received any early oil changes. Due to their highway use and duty cycle, I often times only had 260 to 280 drive hours on the oil with average mileage intervals of 13,500 miles to 15,000 miles or so.

Guess what? No engine issues and the trusty ol’ 6.7L Cummins has not fell outta the frame rails like lots of others indicated it might.

Greg, are you still running Crisco conventional?

As for the OP question on what engine oil they cone from the factory with, I can say for sure that up till 2018’s they came with Valvoline Premium Blue full synthetic 5-40 from the factory. This is because they don’t know if the truck will end up in Alaska in January or in Florida in August. This is what I have used in all my trucks for decades. I buy it at Cummins and the price with a membership isn’t much different than buying elsewhere and I can pick up the fleetguard OEM filters at the same time for cheaper than the Ram dealerships prices of course.
Are the 2019 & 2020’s shipping with and specifying and different oil now?

The “standard” 15w-40 that was called out in 18 and prior has been replaced with 10w-30 for 19+.

As far as what it comes with I haven’t heard. I’d be willing to bet that it hasn’t changed from 5w-40 for the same reason it was used in the past.

I'll add to the war. I drank some of the Kool-aid and purchased the Amsoil gear lube when I changed the diffs in the 2018. I sent the oil from the rear out for analysis and it came back that it was pretty much at the end of it's life. I'll sample the Amsoil the next time I change it, but based on the last couple months of driving it might be a couple decades from now.
I ordered a little more Amsoil a few weeks ago and picked up a couple quarts of the small engine oil and a change kit for the Polaris. I have a rototiller that has a bunch of hard hours on it and it has had fairly regular changes with full synthetic for the last 10 or so years. It is burning a fair amount of oil and smokes pretty good when you load it hard. So I changed it with the Amsoil and I have to say it smokes considerably less now than it did. I don't know what that means other than you can't see visible smoke, but I thought it was interesting.
FYI I'm not purchasing the diesel oil for the truck. I'm staying with Valvoline Premium Blue.

"Its sad to think you might actually judge people based on their oil choices."

Seriously??? Let's put words I'm my mouth, I would expect this from 14 but NOT you!

Did this quote of THIS "If I were offered free oil changes I would say NO THANKS!!!" deserve your lengthy post??? I simply would NEVER let anyone change my oil for me. I have said this many times in the past.

Earlier I said "Personally I would dump engine oil at 2-3,000 miles and replace with "FULL" Synthetic." Is that so terrible???

I went on to explain why "Synthetic is in your engine from the Factory. Use FleetGuard Stratapore filter or Donaldson Blue or AMZ/OIL EAO80. HE!! I didn't even mention AMZ/OIL engine oil intentionally for the sensitive ones on here.

I also said "Rear diff I would dump at the same time and replace with this!!!"

Oh yea I also showed a picture of the 75-90 Severe gear lube, was that bad also???

"Newsa said:
I went 2 years before using synthetic."

"That's a sad story." I guess I should have put a smiley face after??? ...........I was messing with him!

"Cummins12V98 said:
If I were offered free oil changes I would say NO THANKS!!!"

Newsa said: "I'm not as OCD about Amsoil. Good stuff. Maybe not worth the premium price. My jury still out on that."...................I never mentioned AMZ/OIL Newsa did!

Your sister is ugly to me but she got married so she must be pretty to someone.

Fool, someone who knows better but still does it.

Penny wise, dollar foolish.

Point of diminishing return.

One thing about opinons, attitudes, and knowledge here or anywhere for that matter is we all have the option to do with it what we want. For my part, I still learn from this site, been here since 2000, so I pretty much know most folks here in so much as you can know folks on a social website. Regardless of what folks post, I'm generally not insulted, intimidated, nor negatively influenced by posts. I just take it for what it's worth and manage to have a little humor along the way.

So, seems interesting we can't nail down exactly what the factory engine oil fill is. Didnt anyone who visited the Cummins Plant in 2019 bother to ask?

For my part. I'd like to know cuz that's how type A's operate, but haven't lost any sleep on it. Another big mystery.

Anyhoo, everyone have a great day and enjoy whatever oil you choose to use.

Cheers, Ron

From 2017,
Good morning, Ronald!

I just wanted to follow up with you and make sure I was able to answer your question fully! When we ship our engines to Fiat Chrysler of America, they will come dry, once at the FCA facility, they will fill it with Valvoline Premium Blue 15W40 in it. We recommend sticking with the Premium Blue 15W40 if possible, but it's equivalent will also work!

Please fell free to email me back if you still have any other questions, I am happy to assist it any way that I can!

It's interesting that when I emailed Cummins about the factory fill after getting my '19, I didn't get a cheery, and helpful response as above, but a very terse, "we build that engine for FCA, please contact them". I must have deleted it, as I can't dig it up.

That's 2017 what is in the current engine CGI engines, 2019+?:(
Yup, I know. Just threw that out there.

My educated guess would be since the 2019 and newer 6.7 manual recommends 10w30 for temps above zero Fahrenheit and 5w40 below zero Fahrenheit they shipped from FCA with 5w40.

I'm certainly not going to loose sleep over which is in the crankcase as delivered from FCA as they both deliver outstanding protection.

I would bet on 10w30 as in 17 they filled with 15w40 and 5w40 was recommended below 0f.

Yes I wasn't too impressed with Ram/FCA response from 2017 on my previous Ram truck when trying to dispel or prove which viscosity was in our trucks as delivered from FCA. Kind of eluded to 5w40 but really didn't know.

From Ram/FCA 2017

Dear Ronald,

Thank you for contacting the RAM Customer Assistance Center.

I see you are a longtime supporter of our brand, and I would be happy to
provide you with the engine oil viscosity information that you are
requesting, Ronald.

With the information you provided I was able to pull your 2016 Ram 2500
SLT up in our system. According to our records your Ram is equipped with
the 6.7L I6 Cummins Turbo Diesel Engine.

There is no way to find out for certain which viscosity oil came in your
Ram from the factory, however, with all available information, the
factory normally puts the SAE 5W-40 Synthetic as this protects the
vehicle in all temperature conditions.

I have reviewed your online diesel supplement manual and have provided
the recommended engine oil viscosity for your truck below as per page
276 in the Maintaining Your Vehicle section:

Engine Oil Viscosity (SAE Grade)

In ambient temperatures above 0°F (-18°C), we recommend
you use SAE 15W-40 engine oil such as MOPAR,
Shell Rotella and Shell Rimula that meets FCA Material
Standard MS-10902 and the API CJ-4 engine oil category
is required. Products meeting Cummins CES 20081 may
also be used. The identification of these engine oils is
typically located on the back of the oil container.

In ambient temperatures below 0°F (-18°C), SAE 5W-40
we recommend you use synthetic engine oil such as
MOPAR, Shell Rotella and Shell Rimula that meets FCA
Material Standard MS-10902 and the API CJ-4 engine oil
category is required.

I hope this information is helpful to you, Ronald. Have a great rest of
your week!

Thank you again for your email. Should you require additional
assistance, or have any new information to provide, please reply to this
email message or call 1-866-RAM-INFO (1-866-726-4636).

Here's a correspondence from Blackstone laboratory in my quest to prove what viscosity oil our trucks are delivered with. Thought I could pull a sample on a brand new truck, but.

Also from 2017

Ronald,

Thanks for the email. We can give you a range that the viscosity falls into
like a 5W/30 or 5W/40. However, we only test the viscosity at operating
temperature, so we wouldn't be able to distinguish between a 5W/40 and a
15W/40. The ranges are too similar in our testing.

I should have included in post #38 that I did call Ram/FCA at that time and they confirmed factory fill was 15w40. BUT I had no proof for the na-sayer pro-synthetic guys so I have never included my verbal correspondence before.
