Hey guys, first post in a long time. I have questions that I know have been asked many times, but I searched the forums and still have questions. So here goes: I have a 2012 DRW Crew Cab that I have owned for a couple years. 141k miles. I bought the truck used, with the exhaust delete done but the EGR system intact. Obviously there was a tuner installed (parts still under dash), but I didn’t get the tuner with the truck. No idea which tuner was used. Bad on me for not doing my homework before buying the truck, copy that. Now: Truck runs fine, I have put about 12k miles on it, mostly towing my fifth wheel. Never any CELs. Last weekend my coolant temps would spike up to around 218 while towing, fan kicked in and cooled it down, but the truck wanted to stay warmer than usual. I plan to change the thermostat and replace coolant, and I want to delete the under hood EGR stuff, can I do so? I assume the tune loaded has already disabled the EGR, correct? What's "warmer than usual"?

Realistically, what you describe is perfectly normal.

That is pretty much normal, especially while towing.

No matter what you do, I'd try to contact the original owner about the tuner... most VIN lock the tuner when used, so likely no good to them.

Also, normal temps.

I have an 2008, with a partial EGR system still on my truck. I left the ERG cooler on but removed the cross over tube and blocked the outlet port on the cooler and the top of the air horn port. Why did I leave the cooler on? To help the truck warm up in the winter. I now have over 133K on the OD and about 110 since the truck went under the knife with no issues.

What your truck is doing is normal in warm weather and towing a trailer!

Depends on who did the tune, but the probability is that it was. Most tuners deactivate EGR when doing the delete as it reduces power.

Most tuners are locked to your vin, and yes most deactivated EGR.

you can get an unlock code to put it on another vehicle.

IMO, As mentioned, this could be perfectly normal unless, you've pulled the same load under the same conditions and speed and didn't see these higher temps. In that case I'd think the EGR valve is opening or leaking. (A stuck EGR can cause overheating.) From what I've seen, you should see lower coolant and oil temps with the EGR closed or deleted under the same loads. Just my opinion, but I'd be more suspicious of the EGR than the thermostat.

2012 truck with 141K is past due for a radiator flush and coolant replacement if it hasn't been done before.

But, it doesn't sound like there is anything wrong with the t-stat.

It is far from running abnormally hot.

should be easy enough to unplug the EGR valve and throttle valve connectors and see if any codes get set. if you have access to a decent scanner, you can monitor EGR parameters to see if it is opening/closing
