Just thought about having a little more discussion about the CCV Filter system. It appears Cummins has incorporated an oil drain back feature into the system. It seems to still pass oil vapor (?) past the filter and as it cools (?) it converts back to fluid? I add the question marks as I am speculating how this is working.

Also, even though I'm at least for now in favor of having the oil catch can behind the Cummins CCV filter system, I'm wondering how much impact this has had to the turbo, intercooler, heater grid, and intake. Again, I see the benefit of NOT having oil residue downstream, just wondering how much actual negative impact it is.

Ron, Just look at sag2 after 24k miles there not even residue from oil on his turbo, on my '19 with the auxiliary engine air intake over the top of the radiator meeting on right front corner of the engine, with the fender intake, I looked underneath not really an option. The hose length would be kind of really long and what have I gained?

Actually, I think you would gain installing one on inside the frame underneath as the vapor turns to liquid it would drain into the oil catch can. On my '02, I had liquid dripping out the end of the hose at the back end of the cab. The vapor doesn't care about length. I read Sag2's post, but not still not sure how many failures there are downstream. I've heard of turbo failures and had one myself on an 09 4500, but it was due to carbon build up on the exhaust brake guide. I've never heard of an intercooler failure nor a heater grid failure, and after being a member here on TDR for 20 years, don't recall seeing any of these.

So, I would say your fine not having an oil catch can as there won't be any real measurable percentage of Ram Cummins trucks equipped with them.

Damn, I'm slow! It took me until today to figure out this was humor/sarcasm... I recall NOT seeing any visible signs of oil residue in your pic, but thought you you might have FELT it. Maybe on the first of the month when doing vehicle fluid check, I may take a peek at and feel of my turbo for any signs of oil. Just seeing the wetness of oil in the hose crossing over the EGR cooler led me to believe there is oil in the vapor making it past the CCV filter. But again, who knows if this ia detrimental based upon not seeing failures on downstream components.

I gotta watch you guys... I don't remember you being funny before.

Never mind that. Didn't you have a RV roof coating lined up ? :D

Yep, hoping on doing it next week. You gotta good memory. I'm going to do it in the shop, even pressure washing the roof. There is really a lot of logistics to doing this and doin it safely. I'll pick it back up on RV sub forum.

Ron, Nope forget the the 12pack, i don't think you would fit under the little truck, besides your helpers have told you to due the RV roof. As some of us get older memory start to slip.:rolleyes:

My truck set a code P04DB, CCV System Disconnected. After misreading Sag2's comment (my fault) about needing one, I'm not for creating a problem if there isn't one. My fittings are tight and oil catch can is tight. Gonna double check mod today, but if I can't find anything, off it comes. My theory is catch can itself is altering vacuum from turbo enough that CCV System pressure sensor dosen't like it.

EDIT: While researching the trouble code last night,I found it is common for folks deleting the CCV filter and plumbing. The pressure sensor sets the code I think based upon flow created by turbo to let you know CCV filter requires service.

I'll report what I do later.

I am sure glad the "light and code set " as there is really no room under the hood, let alone underneath either there is all sorts of stuff under as well!
