This one is for you, Jim W....repowering a CAT D9L

Yes it was last year right when my Dad bought it.
Signed title over so now need to sell the 99 Tahoe.

wife does like how the Jeep drives!

Well Tom, I think these drivability type issues are with nearly all gasoline engines nowadays. They’re really squeezing the emissions. Just think of the mechanical crap that was around in the 70’s with decel pots and dampers on the throttle and vacuum devices to try and do what the computer does today.
Nope- we can’t blip the throttle Not tune to perfection like there was a Holley double pumper under there.
The 5.7 isn’t perfect either. I just try to not to get into a in- out- in jabfest on the loud pedal. It does not like that.

Wayne, this is at steady-state throttle cruise, with or without cruise control, actually worse with CC on.

Tom,
Does yours have VVT, my Wrangler 3.6L does, which seems to contribute to what you describe. Not sure this isn't a common characteristic with the 3.6L VVT and transmission programming. I know its a different critter and different years for sure, but my 2014 Wrangler does it too. I don't obsess about it much anymore, but there was a long time I wished it had a V8 squeezed in there. My Jeep and my wife's 2019 Ram 1500 get the same fuel mileage, and understand aerodynamics play big, but still.... I installed a Banks Ottomind Programmer to reprogram the Jeep for 33" tires and 4.56 ring/pinions, so also added slight tune (15HP) that allows a little better performance.

I know its hard to deal with idiosyncrasies on new vehicles and hope you get it worked out.

Cheers, Ron

I am not certain on the VVT, but I think the Pentastar is pretty much the same across the different platforms. I try to ignore it, but it's the way I am wired. I am "tuned in" to whatever I am driving. It's a blessing and a curse. Fortunately, I don't drive it a whole lot, and my wife feels it but is not bothered by it. I'll eventually speak to the dealer, but I agree with you that it is likely a "feature".

I'm looking at the dazzling array of buttons on the dash and wondering....would the cruise algorithm change in "Sport" mode?? Does it have "Tow/Haul"??

Being a truck driver at heart I would start wonking buttons....

I tried Sport Mode briefly. It was pretty annoying.

Didn't take much sleuthing to discover I am not alone.

It's not a Ram, but...

Yep Tom, Owning a Wrangler 3.6L is definitely a love/hate thing. It's that its a Jeep thing, so that helps me get past it. The ride is great and I get a little better performance manually shifting the auto... mine doesn't have T/H or Sport mode. Even with all that, it's my favorite vehicle to drive in town due to short wheelbase and small footprint.

Is the motor quiet and what kind of fuel mileage you seeing?

It's got a bit of startup clatter, but is very quiet otherwise. First tank, mixed some highway with my wife's daily routine of short trips it got 17 mpg.

I hope to find a used Rubicon to play off road with. I'd like to find a 4 liter, but those are old enough now that you run the risk of lots o'troubles. Just Empty Every Pocket, and all that.
