I am hoping the tq management will go away, shift delay in the Aisin won’t be an issue and less hinting for gears given my slightly larger than stock tires when towing.

Way too much tq management built in. I hate the lag when pulling out. My 03 was way more predictable

Torque management isn’t going away. You simply cannot fit a transmission that could hold 1075 lb/ft in 1st gear hooked to a 30K lb trailer in a pickup, let alone have room for the driveshaft or axles.

Have you considered regearing? I don’t feel like my 18 is any less predictable than my decently modded 05, but I run stock size tires.

you changed to taller tires now change to lower gears.

Probably when they think it’s necessary. Why spend the money on R&D when you have the highest GCWR and most torque with a 6 speed.

They still haven’t replaced the I-6 with one that has more cylinders.

That's apples and pears.
The I6 is the best concept for an engine with that displacement - it would be a downgradein any direction going away from I6.
But a 6 speed transmission is just outdated in that class.

Only in Europe do they use V8s in heavy class 8 trucks. Everyone else has recognized the durability, simplicity, and endurance of an I6. Changing to a V8 would be highly detrimental.

If Ram wants to continue to be the big dog, they do need an upgraded transmission. This will help get back some of the lost fuel economy.

With the broad torque band of the Cummind engine, it is unnecessary fo the added gears. In high revving V8 diesels, they need the extra gearing to stay in the short torque band that they have. My 19 will pull all the way from 1000 rpm on up. Its ability to maintain a gear longer under heavy load and accelerate supprisingly well is very impressive. And to pull grades without dropping a gear or losing speed is impressive as well.

The I-6 vs V-8 was tongue in cheek :p Thou, as stated, the torque curve isn’t what it used to be, but they still do better real world than V-8’s IMO. It would take 575 hp at 2800 rpms to have a flat torque curve on the ‘21 HO. Sure would be something insane thou!

I’m sure a few more gears wouldn’t hurt anything, and I’d like lockup below 20 mph but Ram is doing just fine with ratings and sales on a 6 speed so I don’t see it as a rush for them. Just my 0.02.

I am not sure if any of the V-8 diesels built by Cummings were ever considered great engines. The Triple Nickel had a weak bottom end.

A 10 speed auto would stop all the complaining we hear about how the differential gearing is inadequate. It would stop it dead in its tracks.

Who wouldn't love to have this transmission with these kinds of gears?

I would take one over the Aisin just for "Replace transmission fluid and filter every 150,000 miles regardless of driving type/conditions".

Out of the three diesel pickup manufacturers, Ram is 3rd. Not sure I'd call last place 'fine'. YMMV

Ram did beat generic motors the year they were crippled by a strike, so there's that.

Ram absolutely needs a new transmission. Maybe source it from ZF, who makes a very good auto. And why not? They invented it.

I would love to hear from someone with insider knowledge as there have been pretty solid rumors of a ZF 8spd within the next year which makes sense to me as ZF already makes tyranny's for FCA.

A minimum of an 8 speed trans is needed, would make the hills so much easier to pull, not losing as much rpm as downshifting happens.
But, to keep up with the other guys, they are going to have to go to a 10 speed.
It also needs to be an across the HD truck range change, they have to put it in all the trucks from 2500 up to 5500.
The big power and 10 speed are what have me looking at a new ford, that and the missing Mega cab in 2WD trucks.

I believe more gears would help fuel efficiency while towing. Keeping the engine at the fuel economy sweet spot sure helps the 6.7L Powerstroke. For the Ram to remain competitive they need to keep up with the Jone’s.

You guys do realize that most Allison Transmissions behind 6 cyl Diesels in Class 6-7 applications are 4,5 and 6 speeds...that will get up to 80,000 lbs rolling at road speed??

Let up on the throttle just enough to prevent the downshift and let it lug.....

More gears = More complexity......

JMHO.....
