The only difference between the DRW axle and SRW dana 60 front axles is the hub extensions. The axle shafts are the same. Be careful on what year axles you get. They had a major change in 2000 from the early models. If you are thinking about changing the whole axle housing it isn't very hard. While your at it you could upgrade the axle to a 2000+ assy. You will have better brakes, bigger axle shafts, larger axle housing. Been there done it.

So I can just bolt the extensions on the single front axle

If you look up part numbers you will find that a 2500 and 3500 dana 60 front axles are the same. Get the BOM numbers off the axle you want and look them up. It will tell you about the axle and what it came off. Most wrecking yards can do this if they sell axles. The only snafu you will get into is if you go to a late 2nd gen or 3rd gen axle on a early 2nd gen truck.
