First I start the truck let it run for about 2 minutes not very long This warms up the filter comes off much easier and now I have oil up in the engine. No dry start for me. Then I remove the sir hose to the turbo two band clamps I take my side clamp and break the filter loose. Now I rest drink a beer. Then I get a gallon freezer bag opened in and unscrew the filter It goes in the bag. New filter half full of oil. Sometimes can be a pain upside down Only hand tight. Clean dry hands and filter. I always write the miles on the white filter before hand and only use fleetguard filters. Guaranteed when that cummins gets hot it will never leak. Add oil and turbo tube. Filter goes in the trash with all the paper towels to soak up the oil add oil. Done 1999 24 v

I'm an under hood filter changer.............I tried the fenderwell method twice and didn't care for it.

To be honest I am not crazy about doing it either way, but I prefer thru the fender well. It sounds like some don't have the room to get the filter out, transmission lines or whatever in the road. My truck ,and my sons 2016 have adequate room to pull the filters out. Turning the tire as far as it will go to the left leaves plenty of room as far as reaching in there.

Without that filter cap , there is no way I would do it thru the fender well. I did attempt it once, wasn't a good idea, before I knew about the cap . That's the only reason I did the filter change tru the top until I found out about the cap.

Just a side note. I like how everyone is complaining about changing the oil filter thru the fender well on the newer trucks. To me this is not a big issue, it can be done fairly easy in my humble opinion.

If you really want to complain about something on a truck, go an buy an early 6.7L Cummins engine in the third gen trucks and do a fuel filter change! Now that is a really issue in changing the fuel filter on a 4X4 truck for serviceability. In fact, Cummins redesigned the fuel filter location for the 2010 model trucks and up for easier serviceability.

So don't complain over an easy serviceable filter location.

I've done through the fender well on my friends 2017 Ram 2500 and wasn't bad, but as @gsbrockman pointed out, us C&C guys have it easy changing oil filter from the bottom.

On a side note, I thought changing the oil filter on my 2020 MH with Cummins B6.7L would be easy changing from the bottom, but, thanks to International's sloppy positioning of a couple brackets, the oil filter requires removal of the fender liner. Next oil change, I'm going to loosen and square up those brackets. No big thing, but it'll be easier in the long run.

Ok I can back up what I said about how simple it is to change oil on the 19 up trucks from the top because I recently did so.

Impact drill long 1/4’ extension with a 5/16” socket the tube was off in 30 seconds. Replacement was the same. Added one quart to the filter and installed from the top. Not s drop spilled.

OH and no special tools required. :D

hahaaha.. did mine in about the same time for the second time thru the fender "hole" and didn't have to take parts off

I did however use that handy dandy Geno's filter cap to keep things clean and no leaking of the pre-filled filter...

I guess from behind, the side, top or bottom.....we all know how we like it :cool:

Curious do you pre fill the filter?

yes sir.. put the cap on and swing it into place. A shop rag makes a nice pillow in the frame pocket for the filter to rest when installing / removing the filter cap.

In you picture, are you using a crows foot for the filter wrench or is it a strap type? I use the stamped steel end type from Geno's for loosening / tightening the filter.

Yeah after all the voodoo, I was worried but my 20' OEM filter came off with no fuss

It's a Lisle strap wrench. I just can't visualize one handed lifting and screwing on the filter. Just me I guess.

Anyways it's even easier to do the 19 up change than my 15.

Ron , although a little silly here going back, and forth on filter changes . Trust me I’ve done it both ways , I found it easier to do it thru the fender , regardless of which way I have done it , I only fill the filter 3/4 full . Wouldn’t matter how I do the filter if I get it too full I take the chance of spilling it . What’s important here is getting it done right . You prefer leaning over the fender , I do not , and won’t . Trust me , that filter goes up in there , and screws in easily one handed .

I had a 1993, 2001.5 and a 2015(spanning from 1994 to 2021), always changed the filters on all three from the top! Once you go top, you never go back. Or some such legend! I may have a word or two wrong!

Although as said it’s silly , but you wanted it to continue, let me ask you too , I’ve asked Ron the same question. Have you EVER changed the oil filter thru the fender ? Whatever the legend maybe since 1994 :D
