exhaust brake turns off

I always run with the fall exhaust brake on, even when not towing. When I stop and restart the truck. the exhaust brake stays on about half the time. the rest of the time it turns off. What has anybody else experienced?

every time i turn off my truck and restart, i have to press the EB button to turn it back on again. f y i . cheers!

Unless a trailer brake is detect the EB will default to off on start up. With trailer brake detected it will maintain the shut down state.

It doesn't matter if I am hooked to a trailer or not, it's still a roll of the dice to see if its on or not when I restart. I will watch and see if a trailer being towed makes a difference. Thanks for your replies.

The only time I’ve noticed the EB remembering it’s setting is with remote start and a trailer hooked up, otherwise it’s off on every start.

You could be right. I only use remote start, so It would remember when I had the trailer hooked up.

I have had my TH randomly turn off, THAT SUCKS going down 6% grade and wondering why an I having to use my service brakes.

There is a hack for this: Get a trailer plug and wire a very small led bulb into the brake circuit. Then plug it into your trucks trailer plug. This will trick your truck into thinking a trailer is always connected.

Wouldn't that cause it to record trailer mileage and screw your service records?

Just make a brightly colored reminder sign to check EB when you get into truck. I did this when I first got truck until it became second nature to turn on EB! It's like a pilot going through pre-flight check. Plus it gives the oil a chance to get flowing before you get on the road. My DW always wonders why I take some time before we get going after starting and then letting the truck idle before turning the truck off! Life with a diesel, just good habits and cool down if running hard!

But you would still have to hit the TH button.

Modern Cummins not much reason to do a cool down unless towing IMHO.

I don't know when / what model yr they changed the programming but it is nice and a pleasant surprise that the EB stays active when towing, I wish TH did also. I will say that our 2012 HO 2500 does not remember if a trailer is connected in any mode, so on that one you have to hit both buttons every time as was indicated.

After watching the EB, I realize the brake only stays on if the trailer is hooked up. My operation is normal. Thanks for the help TDR.

Won't halp y'all much, but on C&Cs, EB come on at startup as long as it was on at shutdown, even without trailer plugged in. Pretty interesting Ram does it on some and not others.
