Simply don’t wait to start.
With push button start , you need to push it twice to override the grid heater .
Simply don’t wait to start.
Are you saying use the "don't wait to start" instead of disconnecting? If you are, doesn't the grid heater still cycle after the engine starts when it is cold... even if you don't wait? If you are telling me that to prevent a code...I got that bit. Also, I have a scangauge that I leave connected to monitor the regens...it will also clear codes if I get one from not waiting.
Complicated how , obviously with a key ,yes don’t wait just start it .
My reply was actually for the benefit of those with push button start , only way to override the grid is two pushes of button when starting, or the truck is going to wait for that grid heater to do it’s thing , don’t remember exactly what the temperature range is when the grid heater is activated, seemed like it was in the 40’s.
Not sure about that as my grid heater wanted to cycle yesterday morning and it barely made it into the fifties if that! Sometimes I think the temp sensors flips a coin on what temp to report! I know when I looked down at dash, it was reporting 58 on the display. Maybe others can report on when theirs cycles.don’t remember exactly what the temperature range is when the grid heater is activated, seemed like it was in the 40’s.
I have read up on a disaster waiting to happen, The grid heater bolt gets up 500 degr and melts the bolt and in falls into the engine causing the engine to fail. read that some replaced the bolt with titanium or tungsten bolt because they need the grid heater for extreme cold weather. single digits as it sometimes does here. I'm goin to just unplug the relay for now and see if it'll start in the cold weather. If no issues I will delete the the grid. some take out the grid heater and cut out the grid and reinstall it as I will. Can Alfaobd turn off grid heater that isn't there. Alfa can do so many things but can't find how to disable the grid heater. GH has been missing for some time. I just get in the truck, turn the fob to start. No issues but would like to disable the grid feature.
We've all heard of the heater grid bolt lying in wait to ruin somebody's day, but is there any real documentation of this happening? I've never seen any. I'm on my 3rd 4th gen and use the grid heater as it's configured with no problems.
No. Watch the videos on ram grid heaters.. I live in the north I disconnected it to see if it would start -4 it started. I will not connect it as you already know. Unless you want to rebuild the engine.I just disconnected my grid heater at the battery post since I'm in the south and don't need it....plus warranty is almost up.
One thing I was wondering would it be useful to connect it once in the winter and use it to try to burn any soot off? Do you think operating it once a year would help keep it cleaner?
big issues with it. freak that I disconnected it from the relay to see if my truck would start -4 and did. When it gets warmer I will disable the relay. We've all heard of the heater grid bolt lying in wait to ruin somebody's day, but is there any real documentation of this happening? I've never seen any. Thanks for the documentation.I just dropped my 2017 6.7 with only 47,xxx miles on it to the dealership on Friday and it’s confirmed by my private mechanic that the grid heater bolt broke and dropped into cylinder #6. I still have my drive train warranty so they better make good on it!!
My mechanic was able to get his camera in through the injector and got a pic of my piston.
