Thanks, TDR Staff

Any idea what this sensor is?

What's up guys I have a 2004.5 ram 2500 everything seems to work as it should. Besides the cruise control (I got to work for about 15 seconds going down the highway 6 months ago. I bought the truck with 140k on it I'm up about 158k the only mods I've done are 5" straight S&b intake I came across this while chasing down possible vacuum leaks.

Drivers side above the ECM?

That’s the Cummins “data link” to the ECM. All CR years, besides 06-07 5.9’s, have one. Not sure about VP trucks.

It’s not a sensor. It’s more like a Cummins specific OBDII port.

"Diag. dongle"

Beat me to it. My 03 has one. On a side note alot of late 90s too mid first decade vehicles have additional diagnostic ports by their manufacturers. The advent of OBDII in 96' left mfgs scrambling to meet new specs while still maintaining their previous diagnostic interface systems. My sisters 98' 4Runner has one. As can-bus systems became more implemented by mfgs. around 06 and later there wasn't a need for these ports as the equipment that used them became phased out.

This is also why if you have a 2nd or early 3rd gen you need to get the latest DRBIII updates before that Chrysler specific scanner is lost to time and the false promises of techs who "borrowed" it, for it never to return.

Is there a list of these updates published somewhere ? For a 3rd gen. manual without a PCM is this ECM only updates ? What about using 3rd party scanners like HP Tuners to update to latest ? I've read that I can apply the high idle ( as in manually controlled with cruise buttons not the cold higher idle ) with HP Tuners.

I'm not sure if there is a list with itemed and defined updates. There are TSBs about ECM/PCM updates but no specifics details as to what is being changed software wise. In regards to HP Tuners I doubt you'd be able to use it as the ECM/PCM is needing to be updated with proprietary software from Chrysler. There are emulator programs out there but unless they come with the official proprietary software updates loaded you can't do anything of use with it.

For my 03 six speed, yes it was only an ECM update. Here is a link to a thread I started for a Hanging idle issue after new injectors and an FCA, ignore me getting lit up for fuel additives. The conclusion was DRBIII updates for my ECM.

Another avenue I haven't looked at yet is ECM rebuilders and refurbishers. You could find a few official companies who support Chrysler products and see if they offer the latest updates. It would make sense if they have the ability to interface with the computer modules to confirm they work and function on a bench before shipping it off. Here is a link to another thread I posted about a new Electronic module reman company in Greenville, SC

The current scan tool at Ram can work on the old trucks with the DRBIII emulator software. It don’t thinks it’s a concern.

Best to call and verify. I forget who, but someone in another thread was looking for a dealership in his area with DRBIII and no one had one, much less an emulator else they would've said so. I could only imagine the price a dealership would have to pay for an emulator and its corresponding software.

Nothing lasts forever, many of these trucks are near 20 years old or more. It just doesn't make sense for a dealership to pay for a "software subscription service"(I would assume) for an emulator on vehicles(Chrysler Products of that era as a whole) they rarely see. When I was shopping for my 03, no FCA (now Stellantis) dealer had any 3rd generation trucks on lot. I drove two and a half hours out too Aberdeen, NC after the truck I currently own was traded in. Even then the 03 was the most vintage vehicle on the lot.

The FCA dealer I got my ECM flash from had a barely operational DRBIII that cut out near 90% Update progress on my first flash attempt. If the tool would've failed and returned an error on the second attempt; I can almost guarantee you I'd be looked at like a deer in headlights asking if they had an emulator. They passed on a nice 200.00 charge for hooking a machine up pressing a few buttons and walking away to do other work. God forbid the price if they have to look up an instruction manual on how to use an emulator for the first time.

Confirm before its a concern is my advise.

So first, I want to thank everyone again for ALL the input. It's one big reason I love it here.

Tuesdak - So I've wondered that same thing, and gone weeks without using A/C to see if that made a difference. Zero difference.

Darkblood - I've been thinking along those lines for about the last 5 years. I also caved. Since I wanted to avoid the dealer, I brought it right to Cummins outside of Omaha. Made an appointment, gave them the VIN, then got there and they said they wouldn't even look at it - they didn't have a computer that would talk to it. That was 2016. So I brought it to a dealership. After wrestling with it for 2 1/2 hours, they came back and said their computer couldn't flash it. All their computer could get out of the ECM was the VIN. Apparently they had recently gone through an "upgrade" with all the other dealerships in the area and couldn't talk to the 3rd gens. Needless to say, it only reinforced my opinion of dealerships. I've been beating the bushes for a no kidding stock reflash since then, but no luck so far. I'll move that back up on the list - I appreciate the kindred spirit!

It was TSimonson's mpg drop thread where he couldn't find a DRBIII scanner to flash his truck. His issue was resolved without it though (fingers crossed).

There is also a triangle DEUTSCH connector just behind the CP3 that is usable for that, for example PacBrake connects to this one.
