So, I've gotta a 2012 3500 w/130K on it. Wanted to keep it bone stock through warranty period. Just now showing codes that indicate EGR valve/cooler problems. Cleaned the valve and was honestly shocked at all the crud that was going back into my engine! I need to get an education regarding deletes. I'm a damn poor mechanic. Damn poor period! What can I expect from just an EGR delete and how involved is that? Thanks all!

There is a ton of info on youtube.... I have a 2012 stock 6.7 and I have no issue with cleaning the EGR every 67500 miles...not a difficult job...If u hit 130k and have not done the egr clean once, then there is no wonder u have alot of crap in there... the key to these trucks is maintaining the truck to the recommended service intervals (or earlier)...

I would cation you against doing a delete on your truck. You are creating a brick that could cost you a lot of money! Many jurisdictions are cracking down on deleted trucks. Once deleted, would be hard to find a dealer or Indy repair shop to work on it. You could be pulled over by a DOT officer having a bad day to check your truck. It's against FED law to alter the emission systems on your truck regardless of the age of your truck. If you're not able to do all the work on your truck, I'd avoid those thoughts. Plus it's hard to find those components due to the crack down. I've come to the conclusion to check build up every time the CCV filter is replaced and at a minimum, clean the EGR/cooler every other time. It's not the worst tasks that I tackled. The directions from the kit Genos sells helped in my decision to do the job. These trucks do require more attention on the maintenance side, but the return valve is worth it!

12's and early the cleaning IS part of the maintenance but 13's and after it's NOT required. Dealers will try to sell you the job as a "recommended" service at BIG $$$.

However, according to Geno's, Cummins recommends EGR cleaning at the second CCV replacement interval (135,000 miles) on '13-'18 trucks.

This is what is on Geno's site. They are talking Cab and Chassis trucks. I don't see any mention of 13-18 pickups.

"The '07.5-Current Cab and Chassis trucks use the DEF exhaust aftertreatment. Looking closely at their Owner's Manuals reveals that a CCV filter change is also required at 67,500 miles, However, the cleaning of the EGR valve and EGR cooler is not a requirement. We asked the folks at Cummins and they responded that you may wish to include the cleaning, but it is typically not needed until the second crankcase vent filter change. They did suggest an inspection of the EGR valve. "Sooty/dusty is good, shellac/crusty needs to be cleaned." If the valve is shellac/crusty, don't skimp, go ahead and do the entire EGR system cleaning."

The quote you posted from Geno's is on their C&C EGR cleaning kit page, so it makes sense that it's only talking about C&C motors.

.....and from the print catalog.....

One problem with the "07.5-Current Cab and Chassis trucks use the DEF exhaust aftertreatment" statement. C&C didn't get DEF until 2010 or 2011 not that it matters much to the argument.

Thanks all for the prompt and insightful replies! I truly value all of y'all's advice. Out here in
Wyo it seems there is a large percentage of deleted trucks around. Quite frankly, I find a cloud of black smoke rolling out of a tailpipe disgusting. I don't want to be in that group. However, I really would like to have my truck's engine last as long as possible. I've always been on top of the oil (T6)and filters (oil, air and fuel) changing but was ignorant of the EGR stuff. Thanks to y'all I'll be on that now too. I just find reintroducing soot and raw fuel back into my engine counter intuitive and almost as disgusting as heavy black smoke from my tailpipe. It seems there has to be a mid-ground out there somewhere. Here in Wyo I see a lot of deleted trucks and even the most egregious "coal roller" never seems to run afoul of the emissions police. Really appreciate y'all and thanks again!
