The rear lift blocks on my 1996 4x4 measure 4 3/4". Obtained the truck in 2011. Have been looking at new Bilstein 5100 shocks. The measurement between the center of the front wheels and bottom of the front fender wheels is 25 1/2" and the measurement between the center of the rear wheels and bottom of the rear fender wheels is 27 1/2"

For the Bilstein 5100 series shocks here are some options based on typical lift heights:
0"-3" Lift: Suitable for trucks with a mild lift or leveling kit.
4"-6" Lift: For trucks with a moderate lift.
6"-8" Lift: For trucks with a significant lift.
Given the rear lift blocks measure 4 3/4", it seems like my truck might fall into the 4"-6" lift category. However, it seems key to ensure the shocks match both the front and rear for best performance and fit, I should measure the extended and collapsed lengths of the current shocks and compare them with the specifications of the Bilstein 5100 shocks. This should ensure the right shocks for the setup. All said it appears that removing the current shocks before ordering the new ones is the recommended method.

Has anyone on here with a 2nd Gen 4x4 and the same starting measurements and replaced their shocks with Bilstein 5100s? Thanks
 
I am betting your truck is stock on the rear. If so the 4600 or 5100's can be used.

My 01 is 28" at the rear and 27" front with a 2" front lift.

So based on MY numbers you have a stock truck.
 
Thanks. Geno's sells the following Bilstein 5100s individually. None mention the stock lift. Will call them.

They don’t offer 5100’s for stock height because they’re made for lifted trucks. From Bilstein’s website:
