Is Stellantis data collection done by consent?

After 19 years and 300k on the '06, I ordered a '25 Rebel the other day. The very first thing to do is remove the telematics module as others have done. No way Big Brother will spy on me. My question is at purchase. I understand there is a consent for data collection by Stellantis. Has anyone not signed consent? What were the consequences? I have also read the dealer will want me to download the app at purchase to activate all that data stuff. Anyone not followed thru with that? Dealer response? If I can successfully remove the telematics module, I suppose consent is moot. But I don't like coercion.

That said, I suppose that you'll also need to keep your cell phone in Faraday pouch wile driving the truck, otherwise, they'll just collect location data from that instead of the truck.

I don't know if it is true or not, but I read that some of their infotainment screens have pop up ads.

There always a bit of data retained in the truck in the event of airbag deployment! Had to say what the full amount of info that's in there with all the electronics that is in these newer vehicles! Used to be, speed, steering angle and braking. I'm sure it could hold location since there is a satellite antenna on the trucks with Sirius radio and or navigation in center stack.

I'm sure there is some small print in there somewhere, could even be when you set up center stack settings and functions. Could take weeks to read all the small print! With phones and LPR's (license plate readers) on police or stationary, they know where you are!

The cell phone itself is another question. I am unaware of a cell phone being used to "transmit" data gathered from the truck. That's what the telematics box does. The event data recorder is different. They have been around for decades and store data related to crashes. I don't know if that information is transmitted on newer vehicles or not. I have read you can opt out of data gathering after the purchase by calling a specific number. But I wouldn't trust that by itself. Based on other forums, telematics and all data transmission can be eliminated and retain xm, am,fm, and nav. Not sure about 25s but I'm gonna give it a go.

I believe you will end up with all kinds of electrical faults and annoyances if you disconnect the TBM2 module. In the event of an air bag deployment the truck will also no longer alert authorities of your location and the event. The government, corporations, and generally bad people most likely have all the information on you already. Not sure it is worth the trouble. You might be able to disconnect just the 4G cell antenna, but it will also make the truck unhappy. And the same antenna may also be used when your phone is connected to the truck.

No forced app install at time of purchase.

When they ask just say no thanks, or let them know you will do it later.

Your Salesperson gets a very small incremental metric tied to the install and help during the sale.

Better to toss them a $50 for a tip and magically all the BS goes away. Give them a Dunkin gift card if not wanting to give out cash. (Insert local coffee chain)

Enjoy the new truck, personally IMO don't see any need to rip apart any new vehicle, you can't disable all the tracking stuff, not much you can do beside the above advice and not buy a new vehicle.

No ads I've ever seen on any of our stuff from Tradesman to Limited. But never say never I guess it's possible, just never heard or seen anything like that.

If your running CarPlay or some App on Android Auto, it's fully possible those have ads from that 3rd party device. But would not be surprised if they enable it at some point from the MFG

my assumption would be that the only way anyone can forcibly retrieve any data from the truck would be if you took it in to be diagnosed and repaired and then you are consenting..

unless these trucks are now communicating to the internet, Mopar and the Feds thru wireless signals, it doesn't seem like anything to worry about

That is exactly what they do when the SIM card or satellite module is activated.

Even more invasive is that If you Bluetooth pair your phone with the truck even once then most of your phone data is then stored on the truck and available to anyone, including the feds, to simply buy it from Stellantis or Google or Apple or any of the numerous apps that you might use on your phone.

FYI this ALSO happens if you pair your phone in ANY car, even a rental…next person who rents it and knows how can access your data from the rental car.


Of course whetherv or not to worry about it is up to the owner.

Good to know and I am curious …if you say "no to content sharing", are you still able to make calls from your contacts and play your music in the car/truck?? I am guessing not.

I have a Ram Tradesman that has a plain AMFM radio... and I have a flip phone.. that is hardly ever turned on...
I don't do social media , Bluetooth or any of that stuff in my truck nor has my truck ever been to the dealer in the 9 years I have owned it .. so it is safe to say I don't think they are communicating with me with or without my permission or stealing my personal info and if they really are able to as an aftermarket form of protection, I have a tinfoil hat to protect me..

Yes, if initiated through the phone. Car then just acts as a Bluetooth speaker.
The point is "download" not "access".

Nothing too new here, but it’s limited to the radios with Nav. Not sure what year it stated but the oldest I’ve seen is ‘22 owners have reported seeing them.

My wife’s ‘23 Gladiator with UC4 has them on occasion since she let her free trial of connected services expire.

I wouldn't be so sure, particularly in the USA. Read this article from 2003. In that case the government was wanting to use a system like OnStar to remotely listen to conversations in an individual's car. The decision by the circuit court was 2-to-1, but the rational used to decide the case was based on the OnStar system being unavailable in the event of a real emergency. I am absolutely sure that car companies have since overcome that technical limitation, so spying on occupants is probably totally acceptable today. Pay attention to the discussion in the article regarding the 1994 Communications Assistance For Law Enforcement Act. Funny how these encroachments on our rights attract very little attention in the media. Might be related to USAID kickbacks?

Anyway, hopefully today such surveillance only happens with a valid warrant; but as we know, any person trusting that the government will not violate the warrant requirement is like a pedestrian trusting that a speeding vehicle will not violate their right-of-way outlined by the painted white lines on a crosswalk.

Remember that your phone, tablet, etc., is probably covered in some manner by the Communications Assistance Act, so the fact that it allows you to tick NO may just be there to perpetuate an illusion of privacy.

And just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean that nobody's out to get me.
