I used a cheap rubber strap wrench for my first change. After that, I have been able to spin both oil and rear fuel filters off by hand. I have big hands though, so I can get a grip on em.
I've got a really nice Curt 2.5" hitch, and it is still loose in the factory Ram receiver. I've been looking at some of those anti-slop devices, but it seems like it would make it a real pain to remove the hitch.
I'd bet bad battery or batteries. Disconnect one battery at a time, and try to start. If that still fails, try a known good battery out of another truck before buying a new set.
I hear all these horror stories about first filter changes. All three of my filters came off the first time with no real fuss, and no real mess. My drain pan, on the other hand was a litre short. Nothing I couldn't scrub out of the garage floor though.
