    Turbo 101

Hey guys quick question. So I’m dealing with a sluggish motor. I have a rebuild kit for the turbo, not really any forward and back play but enough top to bottom or side to side to touch the case if you nudge it that way. No contact with the housing as yet while running. Other thing is I tried...

1997 2500 4x4 with 430000 miles low power, especially noticeable going up hills

Thanks, will do, appreciate the response! Sounds like my problem, power dropped over a period of time too. Cheap thing to try, gonna start there!

scary low power on my '97 especially going up hills...

Thanks for the reply, the injectors are checked, pop tested, the fuel filter was replaced a month ago trying to fix the problem, intercooler piping is good, you sure hear that when it fails! I don't have a way to test fuel pressure yet but maybe you can answer this for me. Is the lift pump a...

1997 2500 4x4 with 430000 miles low power, especially noticeable going up hills

Just wanted to add that essentially it won't accelerate going up hills, under load, pretty sure the same thing would present if I was pulling a trailer. Once the load decreases like the road flattens out or going down a hill the motor revs rise and speed picks up, no smoke issues, downshifting...

1997 2500 4x4 with 430000 miles low power, especially noticeable going up hills

So I've had this truck 18 years. Last year I had an issue with clouds of white smoke while driving. I replaced the cylinder head gasket and problem solved. Ran great for a couple of months but have noticed a decline in power the last few months, no smoke issues, just low power, like sluggish...

97 ram low power after cylinder head gasket repair

Having a weird issue, low power going up hills. Truck acts as if it is starved for fuel, has a hard time spooling up the turbo without downshifting. No smoke issues. Know I have an air leak somewhere in the fuel system, could air in the system cause the problem? Replacing seals on top of fuel...

    Archived white smoke problem update.

Hey bud, all good, just freaked out a little after wrenching about thirty hours. Just finished up with only two tiny nylock nuts left over. Scratched my head for a bit then remembered a matching flat washer the same size and realized they went to the studs on the side cover that hold on the...

    Archived white smoke problem update.

Just wanted to say a huge thank you to all the members of the community who gave encouragement and advice to a relative newcomer to diesel mechanics. The problem was diagnosed with your help and completed with your advice. New head gasket, new thermostat and a whole lot of cleaning and now it’s...

    Archived white smoke problem update.

Ten out of twelve are flopping loose, #2 exhaust and number five intake, earlier it was #3 exhaust then I rotated the motor a bit to test my theory. I think it must be normal for a couple to be close, I kept everything numbered and labeled and I can feel the rods sucking in the tappets so I know...

    Archived white smoke problem update.

Please tell me it’s natural that a couple will be tight, not really depressing the valve but not rocking like the others as the tappets on a couple are just riding high on the cam. I took a straight edge and placed it across the valve spring pairs and none are noticeably different, all flat and...

    Archived white smoke problem update.

Thanks mate, I did that and the head installed straight down. Now I have another problem, I loosened all the valve adjusters and began torquing the head down, I didn’t get far as I noticed a couple of the rockers were getting tight, I’ve pulled the pedastals and checked the rods are seated in...

The slimmest feeler gauge I had was five though and it wouldn’t pass. It all goes back together tomorrow come hell or high water.

    Archived white smoke problem update.

Took everything out last night by myself, turbo, manifold, head all in one. Not the easiest task but got it with a hoist and some blue smoke of my own! I disconnected the sensor at the back, that thing really is hidden! Broke it later on the floor :0( Anyway, good news, found the number three...
