update.. I think I have found my problem. The overflow valve seems to have a slight leak around the copper base gasket when running, which means it has to leak air when it is shut off. Part numbers anyone?

refresh my memory... Does a 98 have drums or discs in the rear? If you have drums it is probably your drums sticking. It doesn't take long for rust to build up on all those spring and levers. Just my $. 02.

ticking... My 95 used to tick like that in 4 wheel drive when loaded. It eventually became apparent even with the wheel disengaged as well. I replaced the front axle universals ( the ones inside the steering knuckles) and it went away. It is quite a job to replace them.
