Third lift pump failure in 186,000 miles!

For soft aluminum tubing only. Rats.

Third lift pump failure in 186,000 miles!

An answer but pricey! I think I'll try the brake line fitting angle if my crimper is the right size.

Third lift pump failure in 186,000 miles!

Taking some time to get all done with the swap to the FASS. In no particular hurry right now anyway. Eventually need to go get a load of fertilizer sooner than later but need a little rain to go with it and that isn't coming right now. Anyway, problem with the fuel gauge after taking the pump...

Third lift pump failure in 186,000 miles!

Have not yet checked the wire size but I'm pretty sure the one from the battery to the relay is nowhere near a 12 or 14. I'll check tomorrow. God voltages a little higher with the engine running and much shorter soldered test jumpers but still have similar voltage drops loaded vs. not loaded...

Third lift pump failure in 186,000 miles!

Thanks. I believe this could be the culprit to failure of pumps, low voltage delivered to the running pump. Too much voltage drop in the line. All that checking voltage on an unloaded line means is that you have some kind of power but can't move enough amperage at rated current to prevent...

Third lift pump failure in 186,000 miles!

12.38 V no load measured at pump 11.4 V with pump running measured at pump Nearly 1 V drop, almost 10%. If it were AC that would be unacceptable as 5% is the conventional limit. I finally found a recommendation of not less than 3% for 12 V automotive systems. We are way over that in this case...

Third lift pump failure in 186,000 miles!

OK, so here is the $64,000 question: Does anyone actually know the Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) for these lift pumps? Surely there is some Dodge or Cummins boffin that monitors these types of forum who actually knows the answer to this question. Instead of lurking on the sidelines and...

Third lift pump failure in 186,000 miles!

Exactly, the straw V has a nice big aluminum klunk on it that goes in the basket where the tank pump sucks from and so should work fine for suction. At the end of the day, between maintenance, reliability and access it is less reliability and more the other two items that I expect. Indeed...

Third lift pump failure in 186,000 miles!

I'll consider that. Thanks. I'm ignorant on a lot of things and on this list is the purpose of the turbo boost and then need for that. EGT I understand but doubt I will or have ever gotten into that realm of concern very much or very long. So, besides the condition of the turbo and how hard...

Third lift pump failure in 186,000 miles!

And there is your answer as to why there is a lift pump for the CP-3po pump even thought it seems you don't need it.... sometimes. I finally made up my mind about what to do today after much indecision. I have ordered a FASS 80 gpm DRP-4 and Vulcan Draw Straw V PLUS a second FASS pump as a...

Third lift pump failure in 186,000 miles!

It appears they will run a lot without a lift pump. More conjecture as to why I have made it so long, I hardly ever let the tank get more than 1/8 down, 7/8 fuel remaining, this would put the fuel level near to the elevation of the high pressure injection pump. When everything quit last week...

Third lift pump failure in 186,000 miles!

Thanks. 8 years sounds good depending on mileage.

Third lift pump failure in 186,000 miles!

That is a really good data point. My on filter pump lasted 111,000 miles. The cobbled up wiring is the problem to the tank mounted retrofit and is most likely unlike the OEM in tank wiring. Without benefit of the schematic I think the retrofit wiring goes something like this: The short run...

Third lift pump failure in 186,000 miles!

And so it is intended to somehow limp home without benefit of lift pump and without damage to the high pressure pump? Thanks. When this job id done I'll summarize here.

Third lift pump failure in 186,000 miles!

Something is wrong with the retrofit I think. Wiring or something. Nobody seems to know the answer.

Third lift pump failure in 186,000 miles!

I too am very suspicious of the wiring since I can't seem to find that it does anything. I know it was an amateurish mess the way they used zip ties and attached it to other wiring. I tidied it up today and put what I think is the proper relay on a fixed mounting at the firewall. When you put...

Third lift pump failure in 186,000 miles!

Just another jake-leg mechanic's saga. The plot thickens. This is almost entertaining to see how fouled up the information is on this subject of pump replacement. The more I read the less I know for sure. The internet has provided us with enough information to be confused by the amount of...

Third lift pump failure in 186,000 miles!

Sadly, I seldom hire anything done that I don't regret it in some way. Usually it is because I have to fix something done wrong. I don't mind doing new things and learning but it takes more time, sort of. Separate subject though.

Third lift pump failure in 186,000 miles!

Some don't call me Eeoyre for nothing. Sits a lot now, I seldom drive 6,000 miles a year anymore but I keep the tank full for just that reason and always have, never letting it sit with the tank very low at all. There are months when I don't buy 10 gallons of diesel in the last four years...

Third lift pump failure in 186,000 miles!

Most of the truck's life was on the Texas Gulf Coast near Houston which is why I suspected water in the tank and checked it often and will now suck the tank dry with the filter unit. It now lives in East Central Oklahoma with dry winters and humid summers. Perhaps wiring, there are no...
