I had the "self check fail message", tried all kinds of things to find out what was wrong including calling Maxbrake. Finally found out that the problem was a broken wire in my wiring harness of the truck going to the rear. It was over the fuel tank, a bear to fix. Works fine now!

Sorry, my mistake! The '01 was a QC and the rear 1/2 doors opened toward the front and couldn't open unless the front door was already open.

Does your door have the "kiddie lock latch" ? Not sure if that year had it like the newer ones or not. But even if it did, it should still open from the outside.
