2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Drivers Side Rear Door Will Not Open

While on a recent trip, I found that the latch on the rear door on my extended cab will not open. The handle will release the top latch, but not the bottom.



Does anyone have any experience adjusting the control rods on these doors? Do I need to remove the door panel cover to get to it or can it be done by just removing the latch handle?



Any help would be greatly appreciated... ... . Thanks!

the rod for the bottom latch probably came loose. the panel needs to come off to get access to the latch. it should just be a pop it back in job. you could put a little bend in the end of the rod to prevent further problems. a metal ruler works well to pop the panel off without breaking the clips. just put the ruler up against the clip and lift.

... . could be rusted latched, too, if you don't use it regular. I know it doesn't rain much in Lubbock, but if someone spilled some water in the back seat.....

I did check the diagram on the rear door latch in my factory manual last night..... As mentioned I determined that the panel must be removed... . Now to see about doing that with a door that will not open!



This issue is definitely not from lack of use, just the opposite. I have been taking care of my Grandson at least three days a week since he was born and this is the door used to put him in his car seat! I told him that he broke grandpa's truck and he infomed me..... "Not Grandpa's truck... MY truck" ... ... . 3 and a half going on 30!!

Does your door have the "kiddie lock latch" ? Not sure if that year had it like the newer ones or not. But even if it did, it should still open from the outside.

Sorry, my mistake! The '01 was a QC and the rear 1/2 doors opened toward the front and couldn't open unless the front door was already open.

Mine did this also, I removed the panel and the rod was loose. To open the door to get access to the panel, I pushed against it while holding the handle open and pulling out at the same time with the handle if that makes sense and it broke free. Taking the panel off wasnt too bad, the whole thing took 15 mins.
