    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Chattanooga repair recommendation

Just a quick note to tell everyone that I had an excellent experience with Diesel Plus in Ringgold, GA. They did an excellent job on my clutch repair, very conscientious and thorough. I used a Southbend 13" single disc with their new hydraulic system. I am very satisfied with both Diesel Plus...

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Chattanooga repair recommendation

SFPadgett, Thanks. Jeff is a good guy and very talented but a little too far away. I decided to go with Diesel Plus in Ringgold. I took Scott's advice and called South Bend for suggestions. I'm going to use one of their clutches. It's just tough for me to turn over my truck to someone else! Oh...

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Chattanooga repair recommendation

Scott, Thanks. Yes, probably South Bend. Something to handle about 500 HP/1000 lbft of torque. I was on borrowed time with the old one and tried to push it a little too far. Now in a schedule crunch with very limited time. Dave

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Chattanooga repair recommendation

Could anyone recommend an excellent Chattanooga, TN repair shop? I've found two shops on the internet, Diesel Plus in Ringgold, GA and Cummins South in Chattanooga but don't know the quality of their work. Any others? My clutch needs replaced and I don't have time to do it. One of the hardest...

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) love the mpg!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry for my poor choice of words, meant to say "fuel" mileage, not gas! Dave

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) love the mpg!!!!!!!!!!!

My '96, 2wd, gas mileage varies with my driving conditions. Here's a breakdown, all hand calculated to the same point on the filler neck; 23. 5 mpg - interstate driving, 2000 rpm, no stops between fill ups 22. 5 mpg - varied interstate and light stop and go traffic, 2000 rpm or less 16 - 17...

    2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Parts I need\want to replace on my 99 Ram

I'm buying parts from different sources. I purchase my "consumables" from Geno's and the local Cummins dealer. I've bought replacement parts from any number of places, Amazon, Silverline, Dodge dealer, TST, Borgeson, etc. Just depends on where I think I'm getting the best quality and value. I...

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) fuel filter

I use a strap wrench from the top. I remove the electrical fitting on the drain first, put the strap on, then loosen the filter, remove the strap and finish removing the filter by hand. Getting the old o-ring off can be tricky because it's hard to see when working from above. I move the wiring...

2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission All ball joints gone again......

That does sound high to me too but I do all my own service so I'm out of touch with shop prices. I'd talk to a couple more shops to see if this is correct for your area. If it is, then maybe you might consider doing the job yourself. I just replaced my ball joints. You know the procedures if...

2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission First step to reduce steering wander

I agree with Neal's list but would add pitman and idler arms (if your 4wd has them) and jam nut adjustment on the steering box. I would also suggest you look at the front end while your truck's on jack stands to see if there is any play in any of the attachment points. However, it's probably...

    2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Motor Oil?

Paul, I'm glad to hear you also saw an improvement from synthetic. Maybe my experience isn't so unusual after all. I also like the 5w low temperature capability but I sure don't need it as much as you! Thanks. Dave

    2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Motor Oil?

Mac, Yes I agree, I saw a gradual increase in fuel economy as I put miles on my truck. But it leveled off during the first 100k. Then I made the changes I mentioned and saw a definite anomaly in my data. This unexpected fuel economy improvement was a nice surprise to go along with the power...

    2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Motor Oil?

The first 100,000 miles I used Shell Rotella T 15-40. I changed to Valvoline Premium Blue Synthetic 5-40 for the second 100,000 miles. At the same time I added a TST 11 plate and boost elbow. According to my data, I saw a 10% increase in fuel mileage. I'm not sure what to attribute this to, the...

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) oil sending sensor replacement

I changed mine a few thousand miles ago, I didn't think it was difficult at all. Just hard to see. I agree with ata to start it by hand to make sure it doesn't cross thread. My '96 didn't have a brass adapter, screwed directly into the block. I ordered mine from Genos. I can't remember what size...

    Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) My 12V MPG

For comparison, my 2500 averages 22 mpg, hand calculated and filled to the same spot on the filler neck. This is mostly highway driving on gently rolling terrain in southwest Georgia. My sweet spot is about 2000 rpm, about 67 mph. I'll notice a drop (21-21. 5) if I spend time in stop and go...

    Where's Ready to Travel?

George, Thanks again for all your help. I agree, a pop up for me would be the best solution but it comes down to cost. Right now, it looks like a new camper is out so I'll be watching eBay, Craigslist, and other classified ads to see if I can find something used. I'm still considering the topper...

    Where's Ready to Travel?

George, Yes, I agree these trips were some time ago and the Swails article focused on his truck and destinations. I realize this is a Dodge diesel truck forum and knew the Swails article would be focused in that direction. However, I was hoping he would have explained his choice of campers and...

I just noticed the Ready to Travel tab has been added to the web site with the article I was looking for. Thanks to those responsible. Dave

George, Thanks for the explanation and tip about their rewards card. Sounds like they will be a good re-supply and possible layover spot. Dave
