    VE pump problems

Tinkered a little yesterday. I lied previously... . the noise is also present at idle/no load but it is not as loud. I installed a new fuel filter, no effect. I'll check the cold start cable today. It doesn't seem to have the same effect on the engine as it did on my 84 Rabbit. I...

    VE pump problems

Thanks soslow91... unlike the CTD, the cold start advance on a VW is like a choke on an older car, actuated by a pull handle on the dash. Sort of takes me back to grandma's Fairlane, when gas was . 49 a gallon and things was simple. There is a procedure for checking the throw of the cable in...

    VE pump problems

Thanks guys... . In reverse order: Daniel... thanks for the reply. The dead spot is in the midrange of the RPM band. It idles fine, runs fine ABOVE AND BELOW this dead/loud spot on each gear, runs fine at 65 mph. I would think that a clogged fuel filter would cut me completely off at a...

    VE pump problems

Thanks for the reply. I think something is sticking too which is why I mentioned the sticking lever near the throttle which may act on the governor. There's 15k on the rebuilt engine, 106k on the body, unknown on the pump. I thought about dumping a bunch of Power Clean in the tank but I have...

    VE pump problems

I never was able to buy back my old 89 CTD or find one I could afford so I have finally just bought a VW Rabbit diesel pickup so I have something to use. The VW also uses a VE pump and I am having what I believe are pump related problems and I hope there's a pump meister out there who can help...

    Question for dzlpwr

thanks to Jay from this site, I have a VW donor pump to tear apart and take photos of. As time permits, I'll set everything up with lights and a digital camera and get some photos of the pump guts. I'll let people know when this happens; it will take a while. Regardless of the snappy...

    92 w/ a shaking/shutter problem

Goode 11... I'd still think u joints??? My 89 2WD did a very similar thing, a vibration that came on at a certain speed. It also got progressively worse over time and became so bad that I stopped and had the truck towed in, thinking that the shaft was going to come off and take innocent...

    Question for dzlpwr

RE: Power Wagon's guidelines... . So you're saying essentially pump adjustments alone don't mean increased power because any pump output tinkering is restricted by upstream and downstream variables. Upstream variables being line ID for fuel volume to the pump from the tank and downstream...

    Question for dzlpwr

I'd guess 2x the mm3 required for 201 hp should = approximately 400 hp (assuming all of that extra fuel volume can be mated with the proper amount of air in the time provided in the stroke and turned into HP). Haven't got any further in the manual, the bathroom hasn't been open...

    Question for dzlpwr

Henry; I think this because there is a bore in the fuel distributor that the plunger must rotate within to dispense the fuel to the injectors. I am sure that there is a really tight tolerance on the "plunger to bore" fit because the fuel would leak along the sides if this was loosely held...

    Question for dzlpwr

PS to Hfletcher, I think 13mm would be a fixed dimension for the plunger because of the mating bore in the distributor body. Anything larger than 13mm would require making some changes that I am not sure are possible. I believe that an increase in volume must come from a modification in the...

    Question for dzlpwr

jbolt, according to the table in the Bosch manual, all VE pumps are the same rating. Max power per cylinder 25kW. I'll let someone else convert that. They don't separate pump "applications" (e. g. marine) in the table, only types of pump control (mechanical, electronic, electromechanical...

    Question for dzlpwr

I've just started reading the VE manual I downloaded from SAE. According to Table 1 on page 5 of this Bosch manual the VE axial piston fully mechanical injection pump provides 120 mm/3 fuel injected per stroke.

Bosch VE manual download from SAE

I followed Bushwakr's lead to the SAE website and downloaded the Bosch VE manual in PDF. For $14. 95, you get 66 pages of everything that you want to know about this pump. Good investment for me because I think it also is used on my VW TDI, if not it's worth it for the Cummins alone. FWIW, I...

Remember all of that deal about setting the kickdown cable and the breakover spring, also cleaning the cable inside the sheath and trimming the return spring? All of that was because I just couldn't get the thing to go like I thought that it should. I finally chalked it up to the big red 55 on...

Hey Pat; I am getting the 89 back as soon as the guy finds a 4WD CTD, I plan to keep it this time and thought I'd see what was offered here. I think I'll need the help as time passes. I've got a KDP to deal with sometime soon. The guy I sold the 89 to did me some favors... stripped and...

Thanks for the welcome, I guess I need to explain Hooterville. I only wish we had a Hooters and those type of "attractions"; we're so small KFC and Taco Bell are in a single shared building out by I-70. I'm here to tell you that those 2 food groups shouldn't share counter space. Anyway...

Hello everyone; Just joined TDR today but I recognize a few names here from other places on the web. I had/will have again shortly an 89 Ram CTD LE 2wd reg cab with the 727 3 speed automatic. This is a long story, short version is that I sold it last summer to finance a business venture...
