Hello all,

For fun I wanted to see how my truck stacked up against my patrol car in a 0-60 MPH test. Well, the truck WON!:). My truck, a 2004 3500 QC/SWB 4x4, HO/48RE w/ The Edge box on the highest setting, went from 0-60 in about 9. 1 seconds. My patrol car, a 2001 Crown Vic (101K on the clock), came in just under 10 seconds. That's not too shabby for a truck that weights as much as it does. I figured the car would've beaten the truck. Now granted, my truck is nearly brand new (12,500 miles) and the Crown Vic has just over 101,000 miles, but it's still one of the fastest cars in the fleet. The real test will be sometime next week when I get my new 2004 Vic, which will require another test:D.

These trucks are amazing aren't they, especially considering their weight. Did you drive and tiem both, or did you have someone else drive your patrol car?

I think the '04 Crown Vics (which I kind of likem, by the way), have something like 230-240 hp now, which is not too shabby.

Wow! Out ran a crown vic huh?

I bought a '97 Crown Vic PI back when I was in college. I bought it right from the fleet with something like 76K on it... and boy was she fast!!! Mine felt like it was detuned in first gear, because it wouldn't spin the tires, but when she grabed second gear, it would really go. If I recall, the computer cut her out at 129 mph with the H rated tires.

Where do the 3rd gen's cut off at??? I presume its something like 95-100 mph.

I might be wrong on the C- Vicies But most patrol cars are higher geared for top speed which will negitively effect their 0-60 times.

Still suprising considering the weight advantage of the Vic. . I think the rule of thumb is every 100 lbs is worth 10 hp. So let's say the car weighs in at 4000lbs and the truck is ~8000lbs. A dif. of 4000--divide that by 100 then times it by 10 you wuold need a 400 hp advantage to be even.

Since we are talking diesel I would think that torque instead of hp #s would be closer to what is necissary ( unless you have 650 - 700hp! lets go with torque ) Am I close? Does the box on the high setting give you more than 700 lbs of torque? That is about what is needed to beat the lighter car.

Light makes might But torque makes the wheels go around!

Sounds like you had a blast

The point about the gearing is right, in that Crown Vics are geared for highway speeds (65+). As for the cut-off speed, I don't know what it is, but I can tell you they can do well over 100 mph and they handle very well, unlike the old Caprices. The Caprices were more powerful, especially the 1996 models with the Vette engines, but smoked transmissions like no ones business and didn't handle very well at speed.

Just wait till you get your 2004 Vic. They are fast and smooth up to 140mph. Now if we could only put a Cummins into our patrol cars or talk the admin. into buying trucks.

Hey RMC... I agree with you the 96 Chevy Caprice was definitely more powerful. The car was actually an debadged SS Impala. But I have to disagree with you on the handling aspect. The 95/96 Caprices were the best all around patrol cars since Chevy's 76 Nova. The 96 Caprice could burn rubber all day long and had a top end around 140. The four wheel disc. 's stopped quick and the weight of the car helped it to handle better at high speeds. When Chevy got out of the police car business it was a great day for Ford and a bad day for cops nationwide.
