On the way home driving along all is well. Cruising abt 45 or so, ding, ding, check gages light on. Oil gage reads 0 psi. Turned A/C & radio off, put windows down - sounds normal? Pop in neutral, sounds fine at idle, rev engine all sounds fine. I figure it's the oil pressure sensor (sender unit) and drive home. Pull the sender unit out (32 mm deep socket) and ohm it out - 3 pins - left - middle - right. Get nothing from middle pin to L or R, L to R reads 1250 ohms.

What do you all think?

I just checked AutoZone.com | System Error

$189. 99:eek: I was expecting $30 or 40.

Thanks,

Pulled oil supply to turbo line, inserted into a jug, started up and shut right down, run time 10 seconds max. Jug received well over a quart of oil - I'd say there's oil pressure. No mech gage available, besides the fitting on top of oil filter body contains a by-pass valve and to get get to the fitting the steel cooling lines have to be removed. I'd guess a better way to connect a mech gage would be where the sender goes into the block. Thanks - keep it coming.

I still can't believe $189. 99 for a sender, Rock Auto has them for 175 +/-.

Both of the above ideas, believe me, have been strongly considered.

However, that still doesn't remove the red "Check Gages" light on the dash, nor the low oil pressure signal the ECM gets.

Anyone know which wires to jump out at the sending unit plug so the "check gages" light doesn't stay on.

There was an issue with the Oil Pressure Sending Unit failing on the 00 - 02 trucks a while ago. Chrysler's fix was to program the PCM to always show good oil pressure as soon as the engine was started, and not to replace the sending unit.

I replaced mine, but unfortunately, I can not remember how much the unit cost (that was about 5 years ago). I did get the sending unit from Cummins, and I really do not think it was much more than about $100 (but I can not remember).

MMule - Rock Auto list the one for your truck (96) around $25. I guess there's a difference for the 24v.

rkressg - I need to call Cummins as well for pricing. By the way at my buddy's Parts house I get shop discount it was still in the 170s

JR2 - Thanks for the info. Before I saw your reply I picked up the Cummins part #4076930 "Switch, Pressure" and the part # 3164755 "Cable Electrical". After looking at it I thought this is a switch! And, after reading the installation instructions where it reads "A re-calibration of the ECM is required with this procedure, Bla, Bla". And in a Note below it states "If a re-calibration is not performed, a persistent Fault Code 141 will exist. "

I decided to check the part mentioned in the link you provided to see if it's still good. Bingo! Part 4088390nx checked to be good, I asked if it was superseded by another part and was told yes that's 4921511 - Bingo again. It's on it's way to me for $83. 46 + UPS +/- $10. 00.

Although the part I got (Switch & Cable) was $25. 49 + whatever the dealer charge to re-flash my ECM I feel better with a gage that's a "gage" than a gage that's an "Idiot" light. And, My ECM is fine, I've heard the horror stories others have had when taking their truck in for what should be a simple re-flash. "We don't need no stinking dingbats screwing around in the ECM". #@$%!

Thanks,

Arrived today. Only difficulty was the old one needed a 32 mm deep socket and the new one needed a 1-1/16, 6 sided, deep socket. Installed and reading accurately. Oh yeah, no more "Check Gages" light - whoo hoo.

Thanks ALL.
