0 psi boost pressure

I was coming back from a ski trip with the family tonight and running about 70 mph with the cruise, when I accelerated hard to get by a tandem semi. As I got passed him and let the cruise take back over, there was no power, egt's peaked to 1400, and there was no boost pressure at all. After nearly getting run over by the truck I had just passed, I limped about a mile to the first exit, and coasted down to the bottom. When I restarted, pulling into traffic, there was full boost and power again. I got out and checked all the charge air lines and hoses, and all were ok. I continued about an hour home, occasionally hitting WOT to see if it would happen again, thankfully not. There were no codes thrown and now I'm at a loss and am concerned as I was planning to tug the 5'er in 3 weeks to Savanah, and don"t want to be stranded in tow.



Anybody that has any thoughts or ideas would be helpful,

I would assume that at 70mph your cruising boost was at 9-10psi? Maybe the wastgate was stuck open when you floored it and wouldn't let it spool up? Banks trouble? I am just throwing out ideas. No unusual noises?

There were no unusual noises, just no power or boost. Even if the wastegate stuck open, wouldn't there at least be some boost pressure? Can the wastegate fully open divert all the pressure from the compressor? With no vacuum pump on this engine (except the one added for the jake brake) what controls the wastegate actuator?

Waste gate control is electronic, actuation is still mechanical via an actuator. Mechanically it could hang open and you would have no boost.



That doesn't happen often but with the EB its possible that it has held soot or something up in the turbine housing that could cause it to stick. The fact that it came back with no issues after you restarted indicates an electronic glitch though.

I didn't restart the engine, I meant that I coasted to the bottom of the ramp, came to a stop, and when I reaccelerated back into traffic the power and boost had returned.



Although now 4 days later it has not happened again, is there any way without pulling the turbo to check the wastegate linkage and clean it?

On one occasion I sucked stock air cleaner full of snow, causing the egts to hit over 1400 and the boost to drop to around 10-12 psi at wot while driving in SD. thru a dry powderery snow. The air cleaner looked like it tried to turn itself inside out.
