I have a few filters in my garage and I wanted to change my oil. One is a BT7339 and one is a BT7349. After a bit of research I think the #39 is pre 98 and the #49 is for later models? What is the difference as physically from what I see the are the same. Thanks!

The Baldwin BT7349 replaced the BT7339.

Going from memory (I don't have both to look at), the BT7349 has a fluted canister to aid in installation (better grip on the canister) versus a smooth canister for the older BT7339. Otherwise they're identical in every other way.

Best regards,

Thanks now I can use both. Went to the truck parts place and the #39 is not listed anymore. You are 100% right on the flutes thanks for the help!.

thanks John:D

Just a FYI, I have a #49 non fluted sitting in my garage. Must be an early model second gen Baldwin oil filter #49.

So much for my theories! :) If the fluting wasn't introduced exclusively to the BT7349, then there must be some other subtle difference between the BT7339 and BT7349.

I just did a little digging on the web and found basic specs for both filters. The only difference appears to be the BT7349 is 1/16" longer. The filter media and micron ratings are the same. Baldwin recently introduced an improved end-cap bypass valve system so maybe that could account for the part number change.

The good news is the BT7339 or BT7349 can be used interchangeably.
