Here is the story... . had a 99 qc 4 by short bed 3. 55,got it brand new with 8 miles on it. right out of the box the power was xlnt,so was the milage, acording to the o/h computer it was on 19. 2 most of the time. . mixed hiway &in town (empty,no towing or houling of any kind). had it for a while ,got a bug up my a$$,decided to sell it,(got good $)... . then decided to get an 01. 5,ordered the same truck with the exception of the slt+,when i got it it felt much tighter then the 99 ever was... propably needs some miles on it to brake in... well it got about 8k on it now &nothing had changed!

the power is good but not the same as the 99 had & to ad insult to injury i cant break into the 16. 5 mpg whatever i do!... NOTE:nothing have changed but year of truck & aleged 20 hp,my driving habits, where i drive have stayed the same!both trucks were bone stock with no mods of any kind!!

Talked to the service writer @ my local dealer (moron)... where i was advised i cannot compare the 2 vehecles & unless there is a failure of componants there is nothing they can do for me!!

well this is my story..... any ideas???... (not involving boxes... i can see it now. . ) >>>>>>>uncle joe

Sounds about right for the '99. Mine consistantly showed 19. 4 in mixed driving before I changed tires and added the EZ. A buddy at work has an '01 LB otherwise same as mine. Can't break 16. 5 on the overhead CPU. He is a bit more erratic than I am, but not enough for this big a diff. And we have the same commute. Really chaps his hide when he see's my readout during lunch trips!

Who knows other than DC what the story is, but an EZ should get you a mpg or two. If you keep your foot out of it! :D

If you don't mind spending a couple of bucks, might have Cummins check it out and verify your ECM has the correct program. An Edge EZ on setting one will probably give you 1-2 mpg. Marco's ECM will have program for maximum mileage. That's all I can think of in my lunch deprived state of mind. Good luck!!

I have an 01 4x4 quad auto and consistently get 17. 8 to 18. 3 through out my 30,000 miles. I know the service manager at my local dealer and he asked me about my mileage a time or two and mentioned that some of the 01's were only getting 16 but they had no idea why. He understood their frustration but there isn't anything he could do, they aren't sold with any mileage guarantees and they don't know what the problem is to fix it. He hoped that after the 10k break-in they will get the typical 18 - 20. We haven't spoke about it in a while, I will call him and see if they figured anything out.

Just called, they haven't figured anything out yet

I would not worry too much. When I bought mine, the mileage started at at 18. 5 to 19 and held there for about the first 5,000. It then droped to 16 and I was thinking I made a mistake. I now have 36,000+ and my average around town is 21/22 and on the highway I'm looking at 24 if I keep my foot out of it. As far as power goes, think of this way. You have a computer infront of you as you read this reply. I'm sure you have gone through a couple of up grades on the computer. An example woud be when you got your first one maybe the system was a 486 or an early pentium. You were impressed more than likley with the performance. You also got use to that performance. Then you up graded to a 300 mhz pentium and it really goes but one again it now seem to lack. I think what you are seeing is the fact that you are adapting and getting use to a certian level of performance and expectation. You have adapted your habits to that level and are now wanting to do more. It is just a theory of course, but it has alway proved out for me. I think what your seeing is normal. :D :D

My 2001. 5 CC long bed 4x4 5sp has been getting about 17. 5-18. . without the trailer on . . I have 2500 miles on the truck. . (Only had it 15 days now. ) sometimes my trip computer says the mileage is different than I have been calculating. . I also read in the OM that it only takes the last 30 gals of fuel into account. . (how ever it figures that??? but that really should not make an difference. )

Check on the ADT page and look at Tech info for the 24V's. . Marco has posted info about the air Temp sensor and increasing fuel mileage. . I have no Idea on the price of the sensor. . just an ideal. . check it out. .

Bryan. .

Thanks for the replys,

so i am to understand that whatever mods were done to the ecm programing from 99 to 01 results in lower milage????

keep in mind... the power is not as good also,20 xtra hp my a... .

could a ecm out of a 99 installed in a 01????

where do i find the site regarding that sensor?

ps: my first computer was an atari 1300 i think(well it was 1982 & all)

Mine took well over 10K before I started to see mileage increases. Try pulling something heavy for a couple of hundred miles, and get on it every time you take off. I was getting pathetic mileage until I pulled something a few times then it jumped up. I'm getting 19 (mixed city/hwy) which I don't think is too bad for an auto, and the way I drive.

poor mileage

Have you checked all the hose fittings from turbo to intercooler and back to intake?? That might account for both low power and poor mileage. That new I wouldn't expect the IAT sensor to be dirty, but you never know - there is a long thread with lots of good info. You could certainly check the sensor with the information given on the other thread. I also don't think it would hurt to check fuel pressure to the pump - is the lift pump giving you the fuel you need? Fuel pressure is something your dealer should be able to check and shouldn't cost much - if anything. Good Luck!

Fuel Economy

Q: What is the typical fuel economy of a Ram with the Cummins diesel?

No such thing as typical! Loads, right foot "operation", frontal area, terrain, temperatures, and winds vary widely!

Here are some 12V rules of thumb: YMMV! Due to EPA emissions regulations, ISB engines get 2 mpg less than the 12 valve engines.

3/4 ton 2WD with manual, street tires and

3. 54 axle: 23 enpty, 20 loaded, 12 -17 mpg towing

4. 10 axle: 21 empty, 19 loaded, 12 -16 mpg towing

3/4 ton 2WD with automatic, street tires and

3. 07 axle and 3 speed auto: 20 empty, 18 loaded, 12 -16 mpg towing

3. 54 axle: 21 enpty, 19 loaded, 12 -16 mpg towing

4. 10 axle: 20 empty, 18 loaded, 12 - 16 mpg towing

3/4 ton 4WD with manual, trail tires and

3. 54 axle: 22 enpty, 19 loaded, 12 -16 mpg towing

4. 10 axle: 20 empty, 18 loaded, 12-16 mpg towing

3/4 ton 4WD with automatic, trail tires and

3. 54 axle: 21 empty, 18 loaded, 12 -16 mpg towing

4. 10 axle: 20 empty, 18 loaded, 12-15 mpg towing

ALL 4WD trucks:

Larger tires do not hurt mileage and may actually help by 1/2 mpg.

Lift will cost about 1 mpg for each 2"

brush guards and winch bumpers will cost 1 mpg

1 ton 2WD, 4WD - look at comparable 3/4 ton and:

take 1 mpg from empty and loaded mileage, towing mileage is about the same as 3/4 ton

All models: expect 1 - 2 mpg less in winter

ISB engines get 2 mpg less than the 12 valve engines. http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/FAQ/diesel_faq.htm

I have 15K on my ETH. On my last trip to Calif and back about 1400 miles mostly at 75-80 I averaged 17. 8 mpg. I hope it gets to 20 on the open road with more miles.

Thanks, guys

its not that the truck has somthing wrong with it,my milage figures fall in within what most everyboby else are geting, the power is ok& all but its not the same as the 99.

its just that i'm trying to understand how come there is such a diference in "personality" between the 99 & 01. 5 in the the same spec vehecle.

I checked all intake plumbing conections... . all is good

guess i will run fuel pressure test next(will have to fabriqate a gage... )what are the specs???is it min of 2psi @wot??

Tow something heavy and...

don't forgt that the "99" had how many miles on it before you traded for the "01. " My "99" felt stronger with 60K on it compared to the "01" with very little miles on her. Like you, my "01" started out with mileage around the 17 mark. With just over 15K on her now, I just broke the 21 mpg mark this weekend on a trip up into the UP. The major difference is that I bought the truck to tow.

One other suggestion, FUEL FILTER!!! I found on mine with just 6000 miles, the filter was plugged.

Wow... I wish my milage was that high. Averaging 10. 5 mpg.

Been to Cummins and dealers many times. They say everything is within specs. I know I drive it loaded all the time but this still seems way low to me.

Weighed in at the scales 10. 5 k lbs

Checked my IAT after reading the other post. Seemed out of norm. hopefully that might be an answer. Also found the plastic bushing from the air box to the fender wasnt connected.

Who knows, ordered gauges to get a better feel of whats going on before I try any mods.

Also had low mileage then i put some heavy (wet) sand in the back and drove up that 405 grade a few times and it seemed to helped(at wot :D ) or like runaway said check that fuel filter, mine was pretty bad at 5000.

Now i see 16 to 24 :D

I would have to agree; I have a 2001 3/4 4*4 5 speed and it doesn't run as good as my brothers 99' that is the same truck; it's not as strong or get the same mileage; EPA is pure dook; the best days were the 12 valve's put in case tractors & all other kinds of ag & construction equipment that would run forever without the electronic crap.

I think you should go to Cummins and see if they would upgrade for some$ and make these new ones run like the do in the medium duties; does any one know of a good Cummins shop in north Texas area that will give some more power without any questions????

my 99 only had 8k on it when i sold it,performance & milage was the same out of the box to the day it went away(black monday)

2 days after i got it went on a long trip to reno nv... . pulled the hills faster then a bat out of @ell. . over 1100ml when i got back home @19. 2 mpg overall mixed hw &in town... . had the 01 for over 8500ml no changes in milage whatsoever from brand new.

note to self:got to check that pesky fuel filter... its gona be a buzy

weekend...
