Dual piston calipers do not a better brake make!

At 30K miles, I was greeted at lunch yesterday by the new Dodge brake wear indicator, you know, where the last 3/16" of pad crumbles off and you hear that metal to metal grind.

New pads at Napa, $85. Replacement for chewed up rotor $119, replacement for other rotor because Napa doesn't have an adapter big enough to turn it, and I'm not about to pull the front hubs off my 4x4, another $119 :{

And this week I was going to look into ordering some drilled/slotted rotors, because I knew I was within 10K miles of a brake job.

The old rotors had some serious heat cracks, and I only tow a 3000# boat, and occasionally (few times a year) and 8000-10000# tractor.

Learn from my mistake, and don't trust the brakes past 30K miles, and pull the pads to inspect them, don't just look at them from the outside.

By the way, to pull the mount that the caliper bolts to, so you can get the rotor off, you need a 16MM 12-point socket, and lots of elbow grease, those bolts are on tight! The torx caliper bolts weren't bad.

Just had new tires put on yesterday, and while the truck was up I pulled the rear drums. Could hardly tell the brakes were used. The front pads are almost as good. I am at 40k.

Part of it I'm sure is my bigger tires, which are harder to stop. Much of my 30K is around town, which is tougher on the brakes (especially with an Automatic)

I could have gotten another 10K if that 1 pad hadn't crumbled. I had checked it within the last 2 weeks, and it had about 3/16" of pad left.

I probably overheated the brakes at least once pulling the tractor (even though the trailer has electric brakes). Without pulling the pads, I couldn't have seen any signs of pending doom.

My rear drums have plenty left, I'll be adjusting them more often this time around.

I have over 50,000 on mine,only half worn with 315 bfg's ,six speed and no jake,dics all the way around,I was suprised when I checked them last week. I also pull a 5000# boat 6000# work trailer, and a 5000# toy trailer, but they all have their own electric brakes.
