I parted with 492. 50 DOLLARS! :--) Drove to a freinds house turned the truck off and came back out to start it and it crank but didn't start. I didn't hear the lift pump and figured it died again. It was replaced 5500 miles ago. They diagnosed it as a bad wiring harness after 5 hr. labor. It was the harness form the ECM to the BUS. They said it was just chaffed. After 64,000 miles this is more than a bit dissapointing. Probably my last Dodge product. I do love the engine and it is the only reason I considered it. I see no reason for this to happen except bad design or bad installation. Anyone ever hear of this before? Thanks for listening. :(

one of the guys at work just had to have a wiring harness replaced , he had a lot of problems with it running rough and no power . after fooling with the dealers for a while he went with the buy back thing , that's when they went with a new harness, only thing different was his is a 2004 Ford :D

Nothing was ever done under the dash. I am the original owner. I haven't looked at it as I just picked it up tonight and tomorrow snow. They said the harness was under the dash. After 450 for labor there was 3 bucks and change for parts. I guess that was the tape they used  When the lift pump was replaced in Nov. 5,000 miles ago it was setting codes for communication codes, may be that was the start of it? I went to my friends and shut it off and then it wouldn't restart. Could the motor run with the wire broken then not restart? Can't wait to see under the dash.

If you're going to swear off a brand of vehicle because a wire gets chaffed you should probably invest in some good shoes. You'll be walking alot. No brand of auto is perfect. If they were I'd be out of a job.

Far from my first problem or down time in the dealer with this truck. Nothing is perfect but this has become the worst I have had. I had a 1980 1 ton diesel chevy that went 225,000 the last I had track of it. I like the motor and the truck basically but with all the fixes and now out of my pocket lately it doesn't give me a warm feeling.

Sorry to hear that about your truck. My only gripe is the doors on my truck are starting to sag. I think that's mostly from the previous owner being from TEXAS and going down those FINE gravel roads they have there.

When i first got my truck I went all through it and taped/cable tied all the wires riding against other objects. The worst one I found was the passenger side battery cable riding on the lower turbo hose.

I'm with most here. Wire issues are going to be a constant thing in the automotive industry. With so many electronic/electrical goodies we all want on vehicles these days, wire shorts can be a real headache to find. You sometimes have to find and inspect all gazzillion of them to get to the problem.

In this case, the serial data line sounds like it was shorted. Your communication codes are the tip off. The serial data line is what allows the computers to tell each other what's going on. In this case, the engine controller didn't get the message from the security computer (CTM) to go ahead and turn on the fuel. Basically, the engine controller was told that the truck was being stolen because it didn't get the message because of the shorted wire.

My 01 is in the shop now because the brake switch shorted out and melted the wiring harness under the dash. Thought the damn thing was going to catch fire. 70,000 easy miles bone stock. Repair bill will be huge. I'm ******. Love the Cummins but man these things are costly. Should have bought the extended warranty when it was new. Drove Chevys with 350's for years, hardly any problems and if there was one I could fix it for peanuts. C'mon Toyota build a big diesel please.

Diesel Dog Sorry To Hear About That. But Thanks. I'm Having The Same Problem With Mine. It Died About 3 Miles From The House. That Will Give Me Something To Look At When I Get Home.
