Would someone give me a quick run down on changing the fuel filter on Moms Ram. Don't have an '01 service manual yet, and it is different from our '99.

Thanks, Denny

Denny I changed mine and "ticked" the starter several times to fill the fuel filter canister. The thing still gave me a hard time to re-start. On the side of the inj. pump there is a Schrader valve with a cap on it. (The valve looks like an A/C freon port) With someone cycling the fuel pump, I bleed the air out at the pump by pressing the valve stem in. When you get fuel with no air, you should be able to re-start without alot of cranking. Just "taping" the starter(don't turn it over), the fuel pump will run for a longer duration than just turning on the key does. Hpoe this helps..... Chris

Fuel Filter

Motorhead - - - Good info! Any tips on dealing with the mechanical side re: fiter removal/install?

You mean it is supposed to be easy...?

Anyone got any pics of this? I have been doing it the hard way, and cann't help to think that this is hard on the pump.

All I do is fill mine about 3/4 full with fuel after changing the filter and start truck as normal, never had a problem yet, truck starts as usual, never know I touched it.

'01 fuel filter chg.

Denny, The R&R of the filter is very easy. On some of the early '01's, the filter top cover has a hex head on top as well as a 1/2 inch square drive hole in the middle. Don't use the square drive hole as it has been reported to break the cover if it is really tight. Just un-do the filter top and remove the filter, change the O-rings and re-install the new filter. I also completely drain the filter housing before installing the new filter to remove any water and debris. I may be wrong, but I don't pre fill the filter housing. My concern is that the fuel that I may be putting in there has not been finely filtered. Chris

To change the filter is an easy job. Should only take 30 minutes or less. Drain the filter cannister by using the drain valve and place a bucket under the fuel drain line. With a large socket can't remember what size just unscrew the lid off the cannister. There is a large nut on top of the cannister. The top unscrews and the filter just needs to be pulled off. Watch for the rubber O-ring. Your new filter should come with a new o ring. Consider getting the filter from some place beside the dealer. My local dealer wanted 55. 00 for it. Said no thanks got it from Genos Garage for 15. 00. Fill cannister 3/4 full of fuel put filter back in the reverse order of taking it out. Torque the top on to proper specs. Don't remember what it is off the top of my head but I believe it says on the top of the cannister. Bump the starter and it will run the fuel pump for about 30 seconds. Try starting it. If not, bleed it from the schrader valve at the injection pump as mentioned earlier. Good Luck.

 I've changed the filter twice now and each time it has been less than a 10-minute job, have not drained or refilled either time. Unscrew top with 1 1/8 socket, remove used filter and O-ring, shine light in housing to check for clarity, put new O-ring and filter on cap, insert and tighten to 25 ft. lbs. , bump starter 3 times and wait till pump stops each time. That's it. Has worked fine both times.

I removed the drain hose and temporarily added a longer hose that would reach the floor. I poured fuel through a coffee filter to fill the housing, bumped the starter a couple of times, checked for leaks, and was off.

i'm with ray it's under 10 min easy. i loosen the top of the housing and remove the filter and o-ring. put the new filter in and o-ring. both times i've done mine i just start it as normal. no air should be in the injection part of the system.

I just did my second fuel filter change today. I like to drain the bowl, wipe off the WIF sensor and see if there's any debris in the canister. The Earl's pre-filter seems to be working, not a spec of crud on the bottom of the bowl, I'm happy :D

Thanks Guys, Thats what I needed to know. Looked at it in dark. and couldn't see if top came off or can dropped down. The tip on not using the 1/2 inch recess is important!

Thanks again,

Denny:D :D :D

The 25 ft. lbs torque specification posted earlier is a maximum (this is molded into the fuel filter/water separator cap).

I torque my model year 2000 cap to 15 ft. lbs. with no leaks.
