Without a fuel pressure gauge, the first you will know about a failed life pump is when the VP-44 dies!

You should have 3 lines at the pump, the one from the tank, the one to engine, return to the tank. Between the actual pump and the return to the tank there is/was a check ball and spring to allow excess fuel to return to the tank sort of like the overflow valve on the VP.
That check ball is usually adjustable.
