2001.5 Hi Output & $1,000

Okay, for some father and son bonding, I'd like to do some mods on my stock CTD. I have an 01, High Output with the six speed, (goes without saying) I have an extra thousand dollars. (since my gun safe is full I want to spend on my truck) My son has been anxious for me to do some upgrades on the truck, and I figure it would be good to have him help me on this. Should I do exhaust? Stainless or alum? Air filter? power box? I know gauges are 1st, what kind? And if I have too, I'll spend another $500. or so. (Oh the benefits of father/son bonding!) Thanks in advance, Dan

Dan A friend of mine in Wash. st, fellow TDR member name MARSHMELLOWS, has an '02 HO. He put on a Banks 4"exaust, Edge EZ (set on HIGH), and He and I put on a set of SPA EGT/Boost, Fuel Pressure/ Oil temp. His trruck scrams and it helped the MPG (as long as he keeps his foot out of it). IMHO, it makes the truck nice, powerful, sounds good, and keeps an eye on the vitals.

With the SPA guages, you'll go over budget. You could install three analog guages, EGT, Boost, Fuel pressure.

There are some nice aluminized 4" systems... Diesels aren't nearly as hard on exaust components as a gasser. They should last along time

Like MARSHMELLOWS tells me... "It only takes 10% more than you make to go first class":)

First of all, welcome to the board! I agree with the bonding. I get a kick out of watching my son pull his toys up next to my drag car or the truck while I am working on them. He is always wanting to get more power out of them. :-laf The other day I asked my 6 year old to get me a 1/4 " drive ratchet while I was already under the truck. Surprisingly he has been paying attention. He new exactly what to grab.

Anyway back to the subject. I would think for $1000-1500 you should be able to get exhaust from someone like summit for $300, gauges and a fueling box of some sort. There are a couple people on here that sell exhaust kits also.

Keep in mind, the HO performs better with injectors than boxes. But to run the injectors you will need some sort of boost fooler. Let's see. Install injectors+ exhaust+ gauges+boost fooler= :D on you and your son's face. Plus you get the added bonus of bonding time on a weekend.

Guages first, priority is Pyro then fuel pressure then boost. After that I would recommend a set of injectors, a set of DD2's will be getting up close to the limit of your stock clutch, but without the low end torque hit of a fueling box the clutch should be fine. The injectors will add power over the entire power band, smooth clean power without adding much in the way of EGT's. Drivability is improved, and the drivetrain is not hammered nearly as hard as with a fueling box.

You do NOT need a 4" exhuast until you are well past 325HP, and you do NOT need intake improvements till then either. Buy some power rather than fight high EGT's you don't have.
