Lost lift pump at 30,000 miles. Dodge dealer charged an exorbitant amount to R&R. Early on I installed a pressure gauge and an aux pump parallel to the fuel system with the appropriate check valves and pluming. When the fuel pressure went to three pounds I selected the aux pump and the pressure went to 15 to 25 lbs. I believe this saved the high pressure injection pump, for I have driven 1600 miles pulling a fifth wheel trailer since then with out any indication of injection pump problems. I would like to install two remote aux pumps with an either/or switch and eliminate the factory pump. I would like to use NAPA pumps for they are available almost any where, but the pressure is rather high, I belong to several RV clubs and go pretty remote, the reason for two pumps. My questions are if I use the existing feed for the factory lift pump, from the eng. control unit will it set a trouble code? What is the max fuel pressure the high pressure injection pump will tolerate with out incurring damage? And the last on does any one know of an aftermarket off the shelf fuel pressure regulator that is diesel compatible and regulates to 15 lbs. pressure?

Zee, you should seriously check out the Rasp, AirDog, and Fass (no particular order) pump systems. I believe that they would come close to equal in price compared to what you have described, and they would be considerably easier.

I would also like to hear the answer to max pressure on the VP. I have an idea, but would like conformation :D
 
If you go to the DTT web site and read about the RASP it states that BK had the Bosch folks in on the planning of the RASP and give DTT the specs on what the ideal VP fp was so the RASP would be as ideal as possible. I think they (DTT) regulate it to 12 - 14 psi as per Bosch specs.

The ECU does a resistance check on the fuel pump just after the wait to start light goes out. If the resistance is close to what the stock lift pump is (and it should be), then no trouble code.



The max pressure subject has been discussed many times on here, and there doesn't seem to be a clear answer. I run 15psi with my RASP, and that seems to work fine. Could I run more? Absolutely, by just adding a shim, but I can't see any reason to do that.



As far as regulators it depends on what you are looking for. I prefer using a bypass type of system. I come from a racing background using Hilborn type of injection systems. Kinsler has all types of pressure regulators.



Finally as Rock-N-Rammer suggested talk to the manufactures of the RASP, FASS, and Air Dog systems. Lots of good solutions out there, in all different price ranges.
