My 01 shop manual states that replacing a lift pump requires removal of the starter. While I know some folks can do the swap without removing it, it certainly looks easier to get at if you do. In the interest of being prepared when crisis strikes, I wanted to make sure I had the appropriate tools. I noticed the starter bolts on my truck appear to be a Torx, but not quite. Sears doesn't seem to have the correct socket. I wonder if I would have to approach Snap-on to get the right socket. Any suggestions would be appreciated, (including how to replace a lift pump without removing the starter) Many thanks!

Many thanks for your direction on this bolt. I figured I'd demonstrate my mechanical abilities, (or lack thereof) through this question. It seems more and more that "domestic" vehicles are mixing metric and SAE hardware these days. Thanks as well for the hints on the lift pump swap.

That is a 12 point bolt in the picture, all the bolts on the 01 are metric, and yes, I did the lift pump from the top, piece-o-cake!!! :D :D

i just changed mine last week you dont need to remove the starter

just go from the top just watch out for the washers from the bango fittings

there is one on either side and dont over tighten the bolts

Happy playing

Thanks to you all!

Thanks to you all for responding. I would have to assume than none of you have big arms like Popeye, or that few of you need to smear your arms with Olive Oil to gain access to the bolts of the lift pump from the top. It sure looks like you'd have to be double-jointed to squeeze your arms and fingers in from above. I'm encouraged that if armed with a spare pump, and some metric wrenches, even I might be able to change the dang thing out. I'll have the confidence to cruise the Alaska Hwy once again and not be left stranded in the boonies because of a silly failed lift pump. Sorry about the cartoon references!
