This is my first posting but have been a member for a while and have learned a great deal from everyone’s experiences.

I have a `01 4x4 with 70k miles that has just begun having some stiffness when turning the wheel to the "left" no issue to the right. It is more noticeable if the truck is not moving or going very slow. On normal turns you don't notice anything.

The stabilizer has been taken off to see if that was the problem and it wasn't. All the linkage seems tight, joint that can be greased have been maintained. Just flushed the power steering fluid and it seems to be ok. I think it is mechanical not hydraulic.

If someone has had similar experience or has suggested fixes, please let me know.

 I am not sure what it could be or how to fix it.

From 96 service manual, "Binding and Sticking"

1. Low fluid level.

2. Tire pressure.

3 Steering components.

4. Loose belt.

5. Pump control valve.

6. Column coupler binding.

7. Steering gear worn or out of adjustment.

There was a post within the last few months similar to yours.

Thank you for the information and things to look into. I took it to a mechanic and they ruled out a few of these so I will check out the other.

1. Low fluid level. They just replaced all the fluid and flushed it.

2. Tire pressure. The tire presure is the same

3 Steering components. The only thing they did was disconnect the steering stabilizer and it is going back in on Tue.

4. Loose belt. They are in good shape

5. Pump control valve. I am not sure how to, so They will need to check this

6. Column coupler binding. I am not sure how to so, They will need to check this

7. Steering gear worn or out of adjustment. This is in the steering box, and again it hasn't been checked.

I am afraid to know what this is going to cost. The truck has been great and this is the first time they have seen this as well. I am looking forward to hearing from anyone else that may have some ideas or had a similar problem and how it was fixed.

Check the ujoints in the axle shafts. I just replaced one in my first gen. It did not inhibit steering, but after right hand turns, it would not return to center on its own, and had a wobble until the shaft straightend back out.

For anyone that is interested, the problem was the steering box. Replaced it with a Mopar box and it's good to go, no more binding.

Is a 1/4" of play too much in the ball joints? I thought with 10" or so of motion in the springs that wasn't too bad.

Also when should you replace the ball joints, tie rods (with something you can put grease in) and Track bar?

Please let me know if anyone has had experience with this.
