'74 Ford F-350/Cummins 6BTA

Alternatives to the 4bt

I had an 01 24 valve cummins given to me . it is complete with all the wiring , computer, even the fuel peddle. My problem is i have no clue how to wire it up enough to make it run. My plan is to put it in a 94 ram i have. I have posted this ? on a couple sire but no one has even tried to help. Please . Can any one tell me what wires i HAVE to hook up to get it running ? I would be happy to post the entire project on here to help the next guy that tries this .

After owning a 2001.5 for 14 years and doing a lot of wiring mods etc on it, and I can say you have a really big project ahead of you.

and it seems like very little help. I have posted to every cummins , diesel, and swap site i can find , not one answer yet. I would think some one has done this already. Plus i hate to think i have to throw away a cummins cause I'm not smart enough to wire it . wow that hard to swallow .

What was the common feedback from all the other posts on the other forums?

You could always build a stand and get it running outside the truck first if you dont want to tear apart the 94 first.

I dont know of a cheat sheet for what your doing, but the info is available here in pieces you just need to start breaking it down a bit. Start making a list from various posts to piece it together.

I would start with the FSM for the 94 and the 01. Genos should have those.

Then if its going to be a Auto trans you should get the ATS book for the trans. Amazon has these. Or can go direct to ATS.

You will need to HAVE the manuals

Then break it down to some basics circuits cranking, fuel, sensors, computers, transmission.

If by wiring harness you also have all the various computers with the harnesses, you might be short on hardware to make this work, not plug and play with 94 electronics.

i very much plan to make a cradle for it so I can run it on the ground. I can't take my truck apart till I'm very sure i have this one ready to go. I have all summer to get it ready. I have a radiator i can set up on it and i plan to plug the intercooler as well so i know i have it right.
I plan on using an nv4500 so ill need to tell the computer there is no transmission on it. Much like if it was in a wood chipper i guess. as for other posts i have not gotten ANY response from any one . ( except one guy said ( not worth the trouble) )

Yeah if you have the time, its a small amount to get the manuals. So you have all the wiring diagrams. You will need those to start.

Its way too much for folks to copy paste that stuff.

I can't follow you down the rabbit hole too far as time will not allow it, but I have the following questions....

(1) Is the '94 a Diesel already or is it a gasser???

(2) Is the '01 donor truck still around??

(3) Was the '01 a standard or an automatic??

the 94 is a 1500 short bed regular cab . I converted it to a diesel many years ago. I put a 93 intercooler with a ve pump in it . I used a donor truck so i got all the wiring and dash.

No the 01 is long gone. it was a school bus when an allison 4k series .

You would be best off to get a wiring harness from a 2001 truck and adapt that to the old truck. Dash and instruments will be a problem.

It hard to understand why anyone would want to go through this effort.

What do you plan for a transmission?

Many have put 12Vs in 24Vs chassis which is about 5 times easier.

If it was me I would look for a 2001 with a trashed engine on the cheap and put it in that. BTW the 2001.5 with rear disc brakes and front axle CAD are best of breed.

FWIW omy 2001.5 manuals had pages and pages and pages ..... of wiring diagrams.

Getting it running in the old chassis and not throwing a long list of error codes is going to be a chore.

You might want to call Blue Chip Diesel and talk to them about getting a VP-44 IP engine running in the older truck. They are about the most knowledgeable VP-44 source in the after market.

Well believe it or not that might make it easier. You do realize that in that School Bus application it will be rated for a lot less horsepower???

Sign yourself up for a free Cummins Quickserve account so you can access the engine you have by it's serial number. You will have access to a lot more than you would if it was dressed for a Dodge. A Cummins dealer may be able to flash that ECM for a manual transmission, if it were a Dodge ECM they would not be able to.

You should get more responses from some of the others now that your mission is a bit clearer.

actually the guy i got it from works at a place that does diesels, he said if i can get it going he can flash it for me . i know its not going to be a real power house, but being a 1500 i have a hard time keeping the rear wheels on the ground as it is . my hope is just for a fairly strong , fun daily driver.

You have already dealt with the worst of it. I assume everything works as it should so I’m wondering if you just need to supply the basic connections to make it run, use the existing senders and harness, add the senders for the Truck by teeing them in or find a new location on the block.
I am simplifying this but I don’t think it will be that bad..
I am assuming the engine harness is on the 01, should be if you have the throttle pedal and wiring.

One thing you must do is install a low fuel pressure light or gauge. The bus would have already been flashed to make the Check Engine come on in the event of lift pump failure.

Within Quickserve will be part numbers for the 100 pin connector and terminal pins so you can make up the connections. Maybe you got that connector already from the bus???
What brand of bus was it??

I signed up for that quick serve and put the ESN in but i really didn't find any thing specific to my engine. Just what seem to be generic wiring diagrams . The engine is from a Thomas school bus. ESN is 46163240

What I did on my 98 v 10 truck now with a 92 12 valve , I just took the wires I needed to plug in the needed sending units and cut the rest ,

when you ask your wife to print a schematic you can see with out your reading glasses.
