Hey guys just curious if any of you have had the bottom of your doors start rusting down by the hem line towards the front of the door? I know it was common on early 2nd gens but mine is a 01 and I keep the thing frikkin clean as hell. I know living in michigan doesn't help but it hasn't been driven in the last 2 winters. Just venting trying to see who else has experienced the same issues.

My 2000 doors were starting to rust and I took it back to the dealer at 99,800 miles right before the 100K rust through warranty expired. They were not rusted through, but it wouldn't have taken long before they did. The dealer said they couldn't fix them, but after a few weeks and some calls to the district office they took it in and fixed them. That was 8K miles ago, and they are starting to go again. A buddy of mine bought a used truck and they replaced the doors with new ones on his! Since you are over 100K the dealer won't do anything for you unfortunately.

I don't expect them to cover it under any warranty but it pisses me off that a 4 y/o truck is rusting like that already. I had my 93 chevy truck for almost 5 yrs and it had been driven year round and I lived on a dirt road at that time as well. Don't get me wrong I love my CTD but this just ****** me off.

On my truck the doors are not rotting through yet but the factory forget to put a rubber plug in the bottom of the driver's side door. The missing plug is the one closest to the front fender right where all the road salt sits on the door sill in the winter. I noticed the plug was missing when the window got stuck down. When I took the door panel off everything inside the door was rusted and covered in salt. Maybe your door is rusting from inside out. The inside sheetmetal of my door looked fine and was undercoated though.

That is excatly what it is doing. I should check for a plug because I don't believe I saw one there. Sounds like same location though, apprx. 8" from the front of the door right where all the crap hits it.

That is the plug I am talking about. That plug cost me a new window regulator and I still have not fixed the power door lock. The window regulator rusted so bad the motor could not move the window anymore, at least it was summer when the window got stuck down.

i have an 01 and my drivers door had the rust start in the middle. noticed it when i was putting a coat of wax on to protect the truck a little from salt this winter. well didn't have to worry about that spot. showed it to the dealer(49,500 miles on the clock) and manger said thats not covered under warranty. look in your book it says your suppose to clean there as a maitance thing. but he said we will fix this for you out of our pocket. so they did take care of it. but it still bites when you do take care of truck and keep it clean :(

The paint sucks on these trucks. It has since about '93. My brother has a '99 Ram that's completely rusted through at the doors where you're talking, and above the rear tires. My father, on the other hand, has a '95 Ram that's spotless. That's because with about 30,000 miles on it, he took it back to the steeler for paint going away just above the windshield. They ended up going 50/50 for a new paint job. That new paint job was done by a reputable shop, and has protected his truck through eight NE Ohio winters. The warranty is for rust through protection, not rust protection. Think they have it figured out how long it takes to rust through????

The bottom of my drivers door has rusted so bad that the paint is pealing off the front side of the door. The weld seam on the bottom inside of the door has completely split. My passenger door is just beginning to rust, and my left rear fender just above the wheel well is beginning to rust though. This is on a truck that gets waxed atleast once a week in the summer, the engine is cleaner than a vehicle comming off the assembly line, and I still have the OEM plastic on the seats.

When I went and talked to the dealer about it, they told me to go and pound salt. Once it warms up here, I am faced with the decision to either buy a new door, or get a new bottom half, cut off the rusted part, and weld in a new bottom.

One more year and the bottom of the drivers door on my truck will be full of holes, but I guess that is just long enough for the D/C warranty to not cover the rust.

Boy does this suck.

832,

I had my drivers side door & fender replaced last year on my 96. :(

The body shop dude said to drop some light oil down inside the door due to the fact that the venting is poor. The seam rolls around the door capturing the moisture & not releasing it. Thus the light oil to chase it out before is does its dirty deads done dirt cheap. :{

Now, I oil them up twice @ year. :D

That oil trick works Ok but it is more of a band aid than any thing else. My good friend who's dad owns a body shop and he works there told me that his dads 99 started rusting at the same spot mine was and he washed his in the winter literally every day. He also told me the paint is extremely thin on 2nd gen dodge trucks. He has had multiple dodge trucks come in there and the paint was so thin that he wet sanded thru it to primer by hand with a few strokes. Everything else works great on my truck but the paint and the doors have me wondering.

832,

You are right about the oiling of the door. :(

Its a stop gap feature.

I'm wondering if we do another coat of clear on the inside seams? :-{}

Could this help???

01 with rust on the doors

Udaloy,

Is POR-15 the same as the Magnet Paints, Chassis saver ? :-{}

I used it on my undercarrage last year. It worked great. The rusty old trailer hitch is now shinny black. :D

Thanks for the thought.

Guys... why not go with some lineX/rhino/permatec liner on the bottom below the beauty stripe? around 500. 00 to get it done but I will pay that rather than 600 PER door NO paint included for my 95 that was rusting.

any other spots of rust showing? I know to watch the doors, and over the rear wheel wells. how about the rockers? are they holding up or eat out like the ol 1st gens (had a 89 and it was floorboard (driver side), rockers, and over the rear wheel)

832,

The paint supply near you will have any of those paints that you want. Oo.

My local guy had it on display special. Or check web sites for locations near you. ;)

What does the 832 stand for ?

Ian,

Is the lineX/rhino/permatec liner available in clear ? :p

That would be like a rock guard as well. A spray on or a film ?

How much HP my truck has. LOL I wish. It is my AMA D-14 motocross number. What excatly do I ask for if I want to go buy it for my truck. Also how does it work?

POR-15 uses a chemical reaction to bond to any rust, and stop it from taking over. You just take a wire brush to knock off the loose stuff, and paint right over the rust and all. You can use a roller, paint brush or a low pressure sprayer to apply it. Black is the only color I've ever seen, but I don't care 'cause you don't see that area much.

Line-X is ok for the outside. There's other threads on that as well. I think the best idea was to use a grey colored liner that made the truck look like it came from the factory as two tone. Be careful which product you use though, as not all of them are guaranteed to not fade.

Wayne,

Not sure if it's the same stuff or not. I never heard of Magnet Paints, Chassis saver.

Udaloy,

POR-15 is the different mfg, but similar paint. The instructions are the same. ;)

I paid $80 @ gallon. It came in quarts at I think $23 @ qt. :(

I brushed it by hand to my complete undercarrage. Like all of these products, they will fade in the sunlight. Unless you put a top coat of gloss black on top. :cool:

You can search both products to see which you like best. -----

www,magnetpaints.com---1-800-922-9981

is where I found mine & it comes in a few different colors.

832,

We all wish for the 832 hp, nice dream.

I & everyone else share with you. Oo. Oo. Oo.

Do you use the truck to haul your bike ?

A few more mods & it will really haul---- :eek:

lets get to fixin,
