The 02 model seems to have an unusual number of posts with "surging/pulsating" engine problems related to the injection pump and the 0216 code. Mine has started doing this to the point that I will not take it on any trips-I take my old trusty 92 Cummins. As much as I like this truck I am considering selling as I have had to replace two trans. sensors, speed sensor, lift pump and now it looks like the injector pump is next. This is not normal for a vehicle with 58,000 miles.

I've sure beat on mine for the last 48k with no issues. I did eat a lift pump, but with my mod's that's expected.

Based on my experience, the 02 is the best (most mature and debugged) of the 24V 2nd generation trucks. Mine has never been back to the dealer for any problem since I took delivery 8/15/01.

My 02 has had a lift pump, Injection pump (due to lift pump failure), and Transmission seal. If I would have had a fuel pressure gauge the injection pump would not have had to be replaced. I plan on doing the FASS 2 pump to solve the Lift pump issue and I should be good to go. Rusty is right, the 02 seems to be the best out of the 24v.

My 02 ate two injection pumps, pinion seal, rear transmission seal, rt rear hub seal, idler arm, lower ball joint (replace only available with complete control arm). In case that seems bad, it is really not. When I see a seal just starting ot weap, it gets changed. The ball joint was toas the idler arm was just getting some slop. I've got 72 k on the clock. Driving on the streets around boston/cambridge, the front end components are expected. All in all, the only thing that gets to me is the injection pumps.

So far my '02 (with 67000 miles) has gone thru 4 lift pumps. 2 injection pumps, & 1 APPS, all on a stock truck. It does get frustating.

My 01. 5 is virtually the same truck. I have over 100,000 miles on mine... most of that is central Mexico under rough to rugged conditions. I also tow an 8,000 lb travel trailer part of the time. I have had only two warranty claims. The first was the injection pump. I am convinced the fatal damage to it was done when a fuel filter totally plugged before I had a pressure gauge. (Load of DIRTY fuel!!!) The pump failed about 10,000 miles after that incident. Later a lift pump failed. I had a pressure gauge by that time and caught it before any damage was done. These trucks do have weak points, but you can stack the odds in your favor with good maintence and a few gauges.

I've had one lift pump failure, one injection pump failure, one u- joint, and a 4x4 sensor(light would not come on). Can't complain there. Just went over 95k. Should hit the magic "100" in April. Oo.

My 'o2 40,087 miles and It has never seen a... ... ... ... how do you say ... . dealer

Its had its share of small mechanical blunders but nothing is perfect.

I would drive coast to coast in my truck before I would do it in many luxury cars.

Guess you are one of the lucky ones. Don't know of many who do as good of maintenance as I do. Change oil (Delo 400) and Filter every 3000, and fuel filter every 6000. Some may call this overkill, but I look at it as cheap insurance. Have also had a fuel gauge since day one. Also buy Fuel only at truck stops.

I have only had a few complaints with mine. Rough ride, heater blend door sticking, fuel filter completely plugging up once. I have close to 25,000 mi on, change oil very 5,000 mi and fuel very 10,000, check lift pump pressure often but need full time gauge

have almost 75k on my 02, bought it with 26k a year and a half ago, replaced lift pumpas soon as I added gauges at 55k, wasnt completely out, i caught it just in time. 6k later I replaced the lift pump again. Replaced a u-joint and need to do another one as we speak but I am not gonna blame that on Dodge, I think my right foot and 500 lb ft have more to do with that than anything else.

My "02 has been nearly flawless - 35,000 miles (mostly towing!), 3 years, one warranteed vacuum pump seal, passenger side mirror replaced, that's IT!

If you want to hear REAL horror stories, check out the Ford and GM websites - and even the imports have their share of problems - gotta keep our perspective here, modern vehicles are FAR more complex than those a couple decades past...

Ditto!

I did have a weird high idle thing the first time I towed with the rig. It cured itself the next morning and never returned. I'm guessing the APPS had something to do with that.

I wouldn't mind having a quiet engine like the 3rd gen Cummins... . but I'm not about to trade it in.

Lets see... I've replaced injectors twice (they weren't bad, just wanted more power), had transmission rebuilt(it was going to be bad soon),replaced turbo (did I say that I wanted more power?), added a RASP (stock lift pump is still on, just doesn't get used much)... Oh yeah, I had a vacuum pump seal replaced under warranty! Geez this thing has cost me a lot to own! :D
