I noticed that the stranded cable that connects the positive terminals of the two batteries together has corrosion oozing out of the drivers side. It has been my experience that once the cable has corrosion started it is really hard to stop it and get it all stabilized with any assurity of permanence.

I will check on the price from Dodge, but will bet it will be way more than building a replacement cable.

If I build a replacement cable it looks like about two parallel lengths of #6 stranded copper wire with crimp connectors on each end (not soldered, physical crimp).

Is that about right or should the cable be a larger diameter #4 or #2 or ? (ie smaller AWG #) to carry the current + safety factor.

Thanks

rweis,

If you use marine battery cable that is tinned you will never have the corrision problem again. Marine 1/0 cable cost about $3/ft.

battery cables

The corrosion is cuming from the battery and maybe over charging, or from short trips and heavier current flow. Baking soda will help to stop the corrosion. They make but don't know who does a connector that one can make your own battery conductors. They thread together and work like a pipe thread that compresses the conductor. YOu could use a dielectric grease in your joint. Have used them making battery banks in substations. Measure any joints that you can to make sure that factory or of your making are good a multi meter will tell you this.

First off ------ THANKS for the info and ideas.

I have found marine 1/0 and connectors, total cost for 6' about $54.

BTW the Dodge dealer was $185.
