Forgive me everyone, for I am a little new here. I have been reading lots of threads about the VP44 (fuel pump?) and the lift pump (pusher pump) being the major wink links on the CTD, and going to an early grave. I don’t mind so much with them going out, that’s why I financed the extended warranty, it is just that there is little to no warning of impending death, and it doesn’t sound like there is a way to “limp home”. I have just two little questions.

1. Just how many pumps are there in the fuel system from the tank to the cylinders?

2. Do the ‘02s have a history with these pump failures?

Sorry for beating a dead horse, at least it’s not a best Oil brand question. :D

The 02 isn't any different than the 98. 5 and up. You have one lift pump which supplies fuel at 8-15lbs to the filter and then the injector pump (vp44). You have the same lift pump and injector pump as I do in my 99. You also have a 5 year 100,000 mile engine warranty so thye extended warranty does not do engine work which is good-no 450 deductible. All years from 98. 5 to 02 have lift pump failures. I would suggest you monitor fuel pressure as this will give you (99% of the time) some advance warning if you lift pump is dieing. :D
