I have put off posting this because it is not a serious problem, but my

curiosity is killing me. Around 1800 rpm in any gear, if I hold a steady

throttle, I get this oscillating, surging sound from the engine. It makes

no difference cruise or not, load or no load. If you speed up or slow down

slightly, it goes away. It seems to be about one surge per second, if that

makes any sense. You don't feel it or see it in the tach, but sure can

hear it. Reminds me of driving a boat when I was a kid with my Dad -

He would always tell me to move the throttle to get out of a rpm the

motor didn't sound happy at. 25 years later, stuff like that bothers me too!

Have I just found the resonance of some of the timing components or

valvetrain? It sounds to me like the ECM can't make up its mind and is

jerking timing or fuel or something in and out - hunting.

Just wondered if anybody else has this and can explain it to me.

(It has done this since new) Thanks, Jeff

Mine does it too, I have no idea what it is either. Doesn't seem to be a problem, I just had my VP replaced and it still does it, so its not injector timing. I dunno. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you, I don't.

Exhaust drone

I have the same thing, it drove me nuts for a while. When I switched to a 4" exhaust it actually helped cut down the drone.

update

Just thought I would update this. Shortly after I posted this, my problem

I described gradually got worse, especially in the mornings before it warms

up good. Steady throttle anywhere around 1700-1800 rpms giving a loud

annoying wah-wah-wah noise... shorly later I started getting dead pedal

episodes usually in 5th gear and 0216 and 1693 codes. I am taking this

to be the pump for sure, but tell me - is there any way a malfuctioning

APPS could set these codes? Probably not, but I just wondered.

Pulled a couple tons of fertilize in a spreader the other day and could

recreate the problem at will. Unloaded it just comes and goes. Dealer

says they will warranty no problem, but don't look forward to the next

one, it'll be on me then!
